Abstract: A data card of the invention has at least one security status which allows a number of authorised people functional access to it, e.g. to read out or enter data. An authorised person is one who can prove entitlement to read out or enter data on the card by one of the previously specified security procedures, e.g. by entering a PIN or by using a key. In addition the data card has at least one further security status in which actual access thereto by the authorised people can be restricted by one of them, preferably the card-holder, can be restricted so that, for example, only the card-holder has access to that card. The entitlement to impose such a restriction on actual access is to be defined, for instance, by the input of a password or a PIN. Furthermore, independently of the security status, limited access to certain data or data fields can be defined so that, for example, important data can be read out from a medical card in an emergency.
