Abstract: The document transport device includes an elastomer coupler element with a distal end surface confronting a document path to impart motion to a document. The elastomer element is flexure mounted so that excitation of the associated electromechanical transducer provides an oscillatory vibratory motion as a periodic rotation and translation which induces an elliptical procession of the coupler end surface confronting the document path to impart motion to the document. In an environment where the documents have uniform drag load, operation near the no-load resonant frequency produces the optimum efficiency and minimum power consumption. Where widely varying document drag loads are encountered, operation at a frequency less than but approaching the stall load resonant frequency is used to provide more nearly uniform velocities. An increase in document drag load, which usually accompanies or causes a reduction in velocity, causes an increased driving force to be exerted resulting in a selfcompensating mode of operation.

Abstract: An assembly including a pair of parallel cantilevered beams is excited near its second resonant frequency by an electromagnet. A punch is attached to the beam assembly at the node point, an armature at the antinode and a counterweight at the distal end of the beam assembly. The energy necessary for punching is stored in the beams in the second resonant mode of oscillation. To release the stored energy to the punch, the armature is latched at the lower extremity of displacement causing the strain energy stored in the beam intermediate the armature and the counterweight to be converted to kinetic energy, producing a downward work stroke of the punch. During the work stroke some energy is removed from the system while some is reconverted to strain energy and used to withdraw the punch from the paper and die. Following the work stroke the armature is released and beam assembly excited to its prior energy level in preparation for another work stroke.

Abstract: The document feed device includes an electromechanical transducer and a coupler element. The electromechanical transducer is used to transform electrical energy into mechanical energy in the form of strain waves in the elastomer coupler element. The coupler element transmits strain waves to the document. The oscillatory motion of the contact surface of the coupler element in cooperation with a confronting surface defining a document path imparts motion in a selected direction to a document disposed therebetween.

Abstract: A non-impact thermal printer is formed using a pivoted stiffner-frame on which is mounted a printed circuit card-print head assembly. The card is slotted with the print heads mounted at the distal ends of the cantilevered portions to enable close compliance between print head read/write units and the print media through the torsional resilience of the circuit card cantilevered portions. Compact, simple structure is provided by having the printer control circuitry mounted on the same printed circuit card.
