Abstract: A control system of the adaptive type in which the applicable control law is chosen from a finite set of possibilities, with changes between the control laws being effected dependent upon the relative changes in system performance, without relation to external performance standards. As performance varies, comparisons between successive values for the chosen criteria are continually made and the system shifts between individual control laws within the available set of control laws to tend toward optimum performance for the conditions under which the system is then operating.

Abstract: Adaptive control methods and systems are provided that utilize the relationship between at least one operative criterion of system performance and at least one reference to control the use of one of at least two control laws which establish different operative zones, which are stochastic and deterministic in character. The different control laws used in these two zones provide wide bandwidth under conditions of large signal excursion (deterministic zone), and stability and linearity when the system is at or near the set point (stochastic zone). The error signal may comprise the chosen system performance criterion, and the chosen control laws may differ by using different controller coefficients or by using different samples of system operation. Preferably the switchover point is set with respect to a given multiple of the standard deviation of the noise terms in an equation descriptive of the system, such that the signal excursion is identified with a high degree of probability as being of non-noise origin.

Abstract: A drop-on-demand ink jet printer in which the print head includes a cavity having a nozzle portion at one end and a transducer mounted to contract a wall portion of the cavity when energized by a suitable voltage drive pulse. The drive pulses are produced at a predetermined rate but at a selectively controlled amplitude in response to the print data. In cases where no drop is required to print the data, the drive pulse is at a lower amplitude than the threshold voltage level, and for the first drop to be formed following a time at which no drop was formed, the amplitude of the drive pulse is greater than the threshold voltage level, At steady state operation of producing drops in sequence, the amplitude of the drive pulses equals the threshold voltage level.
