Abstract: A system for addressing and controlling a gaseous discharge display or memory device is adapted for intercommunication between a processor or controller and a gaseous discharge display device. Signals of write amplitude are selectively applied to ionize individual cells or a plurality of cells in the form of character slices or lines to form the elements of a display. To facilitate communication between low level control logic signals and high level write and sustain signals, one of the axes or sets of conductors is maintained at ground potential, while signals of full write or sustain amplitude are applied to the orthogonal conductors. Writing is generally accomplished by adding a write pulse to the trailing edge of the selected conductor. By maintaining the busier axis at ground potential direct communication between the control logic and drive circuitry is provided, the isolation circuits required to communicate between the busy axis and the controller or processor are eliminated, the separate sustain drivers normally required to sustain the busy axis are eliminated and only a single set of drivers and isolation circuitry is required to interconnect the control logic to the drive selection circuitry. By operating in this mode, the sustain signal is not interrupted during a write operation thereby permitting use of the inherent margin in the panel and providing a display of uniform intensity.

Digital signals indicative of the orthogonal components of a vector (e.g. forming portion of an Alpha-Numeric character) are converted to analogue voltages and utilized for direct control of the current in the X and Y deflection coils of a cathode-ray tube on which the vector is to be traced. Considering the X deflection only (a similar arrangement being employed in respect of the Y deflection) the digital signals comprising six bit words derived from an assembly register are fed to separate AND stages 21 . . . 26 of a buffer register and via inverting stages 31 . . . 36 to AND stages 41 . . . 46 the outputs of both sets of stages when read by a positive pulse on transfer line 47, being fed to respective stages 51 . . . 56 of a latch register which operates to produce a positive output from stages 61 . . . 66 and a negative output from stages 71 . . . 76 in the binary-one condition whilst reversing these polarities in the binary-zero condition. The former stages are connected to weighted resistors 101 forming a digital-to-analogue converter and the latter to a similar converter 103, both converters being arranged to control the flow of current through respective halves 113, 113 1 of a centre-tapped deflection winding (critically damped so that a reasonably linear deflection is produced) the arrangement operating such that current flow through the converters 101, 103 occurs only when the output of the associated latch register stage has a negative value. Each vector component is traced in a fixed time irrespective of its length and to prevent variation in trace brightness a control signal proportional to the current change is derived from resistors 107, 107 1 and after suitable shaping, employed to control the tube beam intensity.
