Abstract: 1,152,989. Recognizing handwritten symbols. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 18 Nov., 1966 [6 Dec., 1965], No. 51658/66. Heading G4R. Apparatus for representing a character written by moving a writing instrument comprises means for transmitting the movement of the writing instrument to a plurality of members, each of which is displaced in direct correspondence with the component of the movement in a different respective direction, and means associated with each member for providing an output signal corresponding to the movement in the respective direction across at least one predetermined line extending transversely to the direction, the sequence of occurrence of the signals being representative of the written character. Each position on a document at which a character may be written by hand is preprinted with a grid of two horizontal and one vertical line (other possible grids are described). When the pen is moved a pantograph and other mechanical linkage supporting the pen rotate two optically-sensed marked discs by amounts corresponding to the vertical and horizontal components of the pen movement respectively. Character spacing information is read automatically or by the operator (who then keys it in) from format symbols preprinted on the document, and used to select tracks on the discs and selectively augment the pulse trains from these tracks by extra pulses obtained therefrom by frequency division, so as to supply a pulse on a respective one of three leads each time one of the three preprinted grid lines is crossed. The three leads are gated to respective shift registers provided a pressure-sensitive switch on the pen is closed. Shortly after any shift register receives a pulse, all the registers are shifted by one position. The shift register contents are passed in parallel to a diode matrix to identify the character, one of two sets of matrix outputs (letters and numbers) being gated out when the operator actuates an end of character switch, depending on the position of a " case shift " switch. The latter may be controlled manually or by the (automatically sensed) format symbols on the document to indicate whether a letter or numeral is being written. This switch is not necessary if similar characters are distinguished by being written in opposite senses. The gated matrix outputs are displayed and, if considered satisfactory by the operator, are then passed to a recorder or computer. The shift register outputs may alternatively be treated as a ternary number, one bit from each register contributing to each ternary digit with a weight of 0, 1 or 2 depending on the register. In this case the outputs are gated to a ternary adder which is partially controlled by the " case shift " switch and feeds a computer on request by the latter. The computer identifies the character by table look-up.
