Abstract: A peripheral device (320) for use in a data processing system (300) is proposed. The peripheral device includes a panel (320) carrying a mechanical keyboard (330) and a touch-screen (335) on opposed surfaces. The panel may be turned upside down, so as to make available either the keyboard or the touch-screen. In this way, the keyboard may be used when working with applications doing ordinary computing work; in addition, the touch-screen may be used as an alternative input/output unit that is configurable to meet the needs of different applications. For example, the touch-screen displays a colored console when playing games, a navigation toolbar when surfing on the INTERNET, a piano keyboard when playing music, and so on.

Abstract: A notebook/laptop computer keyboard 102 (Fig.3) includes a backlit display 248 which is hingeably attached 106 thereto. The arrangement comprises at least one translucent key 110 (Fig.4) and at least one fibre-optic cable 302 which conducts light from the backlight of the display via an optical conducting portion 404 to illuminate a translucent top portion 402 of the key. The level of illumination may be varied by using the fibre-optic cable(s) to transmit light through two optically transparent portions (502,504,Fig.5), wherein the two portions have an area of contact between them which may be varied by sliding portion 504 along portion 502 in the direction of arrow 506. The colour of light used for illumination may be adjusted by an arrangement which includes a rotatable prism (704,Fig.7) which receives light 708 from the backlight and splits the received light according to the wavelength thereof, and a coupler 706 which collects all or a portion of the light split by the prism and transmits all the collected light to the fibre-optic cable(s) 710 which conducts the light to illuminate the keyboard. The illumination arrangement may be applied to other portions of the computer, for example, a pointing device, or a manufacturer's logotype.

Abstract: A solution for logging at least one stream of records in a data-processing system is proposed. A method comprises, for the stream of records, receiving the records in succession, logging the records into a log structure (fig 2A), and in response to fulfillment of a pre-defined purging condition diverting (Fig 2B) the logging of the records to a buffer structure, purging the log structure according to a set of purging criteria in response to the diverting, moving the records logged in the buffer structure to the log structure in response to a completion of the purging, and restoring the logging to the log structure in response to a completion of the moving.
