Abstract: An improvement is disclosed to the conventional single node operating system to provide a single system interface to a user although multiple independent nodes (A,B,C) are involved. The improvement comprises a technique for creating a single set of master system files. These master system files define the system characteristics that a user at any node in the system can expect to have. The master system files are mounted remotely from each of the nodes of the system and a local copy of the master system files is kept locally reflecting the current contents of the master system file. If a master file is not available, the local copy is used in read only mode until the node containing the master is available. In addition, each user has its own file tree organization that dictates the necessary remote mounts of directories to enable a user logged on to any node to have the same view of the system that would be obtained from any other node in the system by that user.

Abstract: A system and method for controlling access to shared resources in a distributed computer system. Access to shared resources is controlled by a local authorization token manager. Only computer processes holding authorization tokens for the requested operation may perform that operation. Each requested operation checks for the proper token. If the token is not held by the process, it is requested. The local token manager resolves token conflicts before granting tokens. A token manager of a distributed file system export protocol also is able to request authorization tokens from the local token manager. The export protocol token manager controls authorization tokens for that particular distributed file system protocol. Multiple different export protocols may request tokens from the local token manager. The shared resources may therefore be shared by multiple different export protocols without conflict. Local processes and processes requesting shared resource operations through an export protocol that does not itself manage tokens are granted tokens through the operation token request mechanism. This mechanism enables local processes to use shared resources without the performance penalty of having to request through a local distributed client process.

Abstract: The system and method of this invention gives an application running on an operating system the ability to communicate through the network protocols of a network architecture such as SNA. The network architecture is placed within the file structure of the operating system. The application accesses the network architecture through a device driver. The network architecture device driver is called through the operating system's calls as if it were a file contained within the file directory of the operating system. In this way, access to the network architecture supports the sequential I/O model of the operating system.

Abstract: Copy-on-write segment sharing is accommodated in a virtual memory virtual machine data processing system in which a Virtual Resource Manager establishes virtual machines which execute at least one UNIX type operating system which includes SHMAT type System Calls to permit a file to be concurrently shared by more than one user. An improved System Call is provided to create a copy-on-write type file that can be shared. A mapped file type segment is established and provides two special fields in the map node data structure that function to control the concurrent use of the copy-on-write segment by multiple users.

Abstract: A computer system having a display adapter, a refresh buffer and an interactive display terminal with a screen display on which is formed a plurality of at least partially overlapping windows, a depth buffer is added to the display adapter for providing clipping assistance to the software-based window manager in the CPU. The window manager is programmed to monitor the current depth position of each of the plurality of windows. In response to an input request for a rearrangement of the windows, the window manager assigns a new depth value to the subject matter associated with each affected window and requests that each application retransmit at least the affected subject matter. The depth buffer includes an array which stores the depth values of the subject matter associated with each of the windows being currently displayed on the screen. In response to the rearrangement request, depth buffer receives the new depth values for the subject matter associated with each affected window from the window manager and compares the current depth values. If the comparator determines that the new subject matter has a depth value associated with the same window or a window closer to the viewer, the depth buffer notifies the refresh buffer to store the newly transmitted subject matter from each of the applications being run on the CPU. In an alternative embodiment, two buffers are used to store the depth information associated with the subject matter in a window, i.e. a W-buffer to store the depth of each window relative to a reference point and a Z-buffer to store the depth of the subject matter within a window.
