Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for transmitting a stream of digital multimedia data on a distribution communications network. SOLUTION: A server is provided for segmenting a stream into data blocks on first and second boundaries. The first boundary indicates the number of sets of transport system packets, and the second boundary denotes the transport system packet including a time stamp. A scheduler schedules the blocks segmented for transmission. The server decodes the segmented blocks, finds out the time stamp and makes the transmission of data blocks coincident with the time value of the time stamp. The number of sets of transport system packets can be determined at the time of connection setting and does not become a prescribed value concerning all sessions.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide many independent bit patterns on a 2-bit status channel without changing the characteristic of the 2-bit status channel such as changing a '11' synchronization bit pattern.
SOLUTION: A scalable interface including a plurality of 2-bit transmission channels is explained. An encoder divides a digital stream into 3 bits, these 3 bits are encoded to 4 bits, and the respective pairs of the bits of respective 4-bit patterns are transmitted via a back-to-back clock cycle on separate channels.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus allows multiple users to share one or more data communication lines without requiring the users to actively participate in the arbitration. The preferred embodiment comprises an ISDN Port Connection Manager (PCM) for managing the use of each of the individual channels of one or more line ports having ISDN service thereon. The ISDN PCM manages the use of the channels between applications using such distinct access methods as IBM's Virtual Telecommunications Access Method (VTAM), TCP/IP, and Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) access methods. The ISDN PCM determines that an application needs access to an ISDN channel, determines the availability of the ISDN network and sets up the communication between the application and the network if the channel is available. If no channel is available at that time, the ISDN PCM indicates to the application when the channel becomes available so that the application may determine whether it still needs access.
