A shaft-position digitiser in which a pair of brushes 13, 14, Fig. 1, are sequentially brought into contact with contacts 12 is characterized in that a diode recoding matrix 15 is printed on the disc which supports the contacts 12. Two brushes 13, 14 are used instead of one to prevent "dead" zones and to prevent ambiguities. They are so arranged in a transistor circuit Fig. 6 that brush 13 is normally earthed (via 21) and brush 14 inoperative and so that as soon as brush 13 leaves a contact 12 brush 14 becomes earthed (via 22) and thus constitutes the operative brush.

    Abstract: 844,631. Magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 6, 1956 [Dec. 9, 1955], No. 37325/56. Class-40 (2). In a transducer component comprising shoe means supporting the pole tips of the transducer in closely spaced relation to the record by virtue of the laminar fluid boundary adhering to the record surface, the core of the transducer, comprising a sensing element, is movable relative to its mounting in a direction towards or away from said record surface while the coil associated with said sensing element is fixedly held relative to said mounting. In the embodiment described with reference to Fig. 1, the mounting comprises a casing in two parts between which the coil bobbin 20 is clamped, means being provided in the form of lugs 15, 16 to secure the mounting in the apparatus. The core 31 and a shoe 47 pivoted thereon by a pin 50 is pressed into engagement with the record surface 46 by spring pressure. In the embodiment of Fig. la rectilinear movement of the core is substantially assured by the use of a U-shaped wire suspension 35 (see also Fig. 7). An alternative embodiment is described with reference to Fig. 4 (not shown), in which the core is moved bodily about a single pivot-pin. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 763,780.
