Abstract: 1,168,217. Repeatedly-usable writing boards. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 11 April, 1968 [22 May, 1967], No. 17447/68. Heading B6P. A magnetic writing board has a number of cavities 14 exposed to view at least at one surface of the board, and each cavity contains a slug 15 or 16 of magnetizable material, each slug having one face which contrasts in colour with the board, and each cavity having a permanent magnetic field arranged to hold the slug in either of two possible positions, so that in the first position 16 the slug is adjacent to the surface of the board and its contrasting surface is exposed to view and in the second position 15 the slug is displaced from the surface and its contrasting surface is hidden. As shown in Fig. 3, the cavities 14 are formed in laming 19, 21, the lamina 19 being of non-magnetic material attached to a backing lamina 20 of magnetizable material, and the lamina 21 being magnetized with the polarity as shown. A transparent lamina 13 of non-magnetic material covers the cavities 14. The slugs are permanently magnetized with the contrasting colour face at the south pole, the colour at the north pole being that of the board surface. Normally the magnetic field of lamina 21 causes the plug to assume position 15. If, however, a stylus with a north pole at its point and having a strong magnetic field is moved over the surface 13, the slugs along its path are moved from position 15 to position 16, so that the path is exhibited on the surface. If a magnetic eraser of opposite polarity to the stylus is moved over the surface 13, the slugs 16 are restored to the position of slugs 15. In a modified construction (Fig. 4), the cavities are formed by two magnetized laminµ separated by a non- magnetic lamina the operation occurring in a similar manner to that described with reference to Fig. 3. In this form, the bottom lamina corresponding to lamina 20 may be transparent so that a reverse image may be seen at that face of the board. Further, the slugs may not be permanently magnetized, the induced magnetism therein being sufficient to produce the required movement thereof. A board may be formed of a number of panels 10A, 10B, 10C, having interfitting configurations 11, 12 at their edges.
