[Also in Division G2] A digital record is formed by placing a uniform electrostatic charge on one surface of a heatdeformable thermo-plastic layer or a photoconductive layer, placing the two layers in contact either before or after charging and exposure, the photo-conductive layer to a modulated light source, applying a further electrostatic charge to the two layers in contact and then heating the thermoplastic layer until it is deformed. A recording apparatus comprises a rotatable drum 20 coated with a layer of photoconductive material 21, means for applying a uniform electrostatic charge to the layer at 32, the layers being exposed to a digitally modulated light source such as a cathode-ray screen 22, contacted with the thermoplastic layer 28, recharged at 25, separated from the thermoplastic layer at 27 and the residual charge removed by lamp 31. The charged thermoplastic layer 28 is then heated by heater 29 to deform it. The original uniform charge may be applied after contacting the thermoplastic layer and the drum. Alternatively, the thermoplastic layer and photoconductive layer are bonded before charging and exposure or the exposure and further charging may be carried out simultaneously. The record may be read by using a Schlieran system.
