Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow an open system host to obtain desk activity ratio characteristics by transferring a parameter pertaining to a disk array to a host so as to calculate a disk activity ratio on the basis of this parameter. SOLUTION: An open system host 204 communicates with a disk subsystem 202 by being connected with a processor 210 through an Internet connection. A specialist 212 in the processor 210 collects parameters pertaining to disk characteristics. This parameter is transferred to an expert 214 in the host 204. The expert 214 calculates a disk activity ratio from the parameter. This calculation is executed by a disk activity ratio routine 216 in the expert 214. The disk activity ratio is displayed in the from of a report by the expert 214 with other disk characteristics.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method, system, and product wherein a plurality of extents are stored in a first set of storage units coupled with a control device. SOLUTION: This method determines whether a second set of storage units are coupled with the control device 102. The plurality of extents are distributed between all of the storage units included in the first set of the storage units and the second set of the storage units. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cache memory managing method, a multiplex fractionization cache memory system and a memory medium. SOLUTION: The cache memory managing method is provided with following steps. (a): it is judged whether request data exists in a first cache or not in response to the data access request of a host computer and it is judged whether it exists in the second cache or not unless it exists in the first one. (b): Unless it exists in the second cache, access is performed to the group of segments in a storage device and request data is included in the first segment included in the group. (c): The group is stored in the second cache and the first segment including request data is stored in the first cache. (d): Access is performed to request data of the first cache when it is judged that request data exists in the first cache in (a) or when the first segment is stored in the first cache in (c).
Abstract:
A computer system has a main memory and a cache that is logically partitioned into two levels, each with different granular natures. The first level of the cache stores data in segments, and the second level stores data as groups of segments. When a request for a piece of data is made the computer determines whether the data is held in the first-level cache, if it is then the data is read from the first-level cache. If the data is not in the first-level cache, then the second-level cache is searched for the data, if the data is found the segment is passed to the first-level cache and the data is read from there. If the data is found in neither of the caches, then a group of segments containing the data is read into the second-level cache and the segment containing the data is read from the second-level cache into the first-level cache. Least recently used data (LRU) is destaged from the cache.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method and system for reporting disk utilisation in a computer system (200). The method includes collecting at least one parameter pertaining to a disk array (206) in a disk subsystem (202) by a processor (210) in the disk subsystem (202); transferring the at least one parameter from the processor (210) to an open system host (204); and calculating disk utilisation based upon the at least one parameter. The method and system is able to provide disk utilisation which is understandable to the open system host (204). In a preferred embodiment, the disk utilisation is provided by collecting the relevant parameters from the microcode in the processor (210) of the disk subsystem (202), and then calculating the average disk utilisation per disk based upon the parameters. Thus, an open system host (204) is able to obtain a useful characteristic for determining the performance of the disk subsystem.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Methods, controllers for data storage, data storage systems, and computer program products are directed to migrating data after the initial placement of the data in data storage entities having higher speed and in other data storage. Steps of a method to migrate data to the higher speed data storage are (1) identifying at least one group of data having had at least one I/O activity in each of a plurality of intervals of time, occurring over a string of multiple intervals of time, wherein the I/O activity is with respect to the other data storage from which data is to be migrated. The time for each of the multiple intervals is selected such that bursts of the I/O activity are likely to be contained in one interval. (2) The identified group of data is classified to the higher speed data storage and migrated.
