    Abstract: Phase control device for an ink jet printer in which the phase between ink droplet forming means and the droplet charging means is adjusted and maintained by using the reset signal of a ring counter of predetermined capacity and changing the number of pulses in a train producing cycling of the counter. The counter is normally supplied with clock pulses at a frequency which is an integral multiple of the frequency of droplet formation and counter capacity is such that reset signals nominally occur at the same frequency as the droplet formation so that charging signals can be applied in phase with the formation of droplets. For unwanted droplets, a sawtooth wave is applied to the charge plate so that the charge on the droplet depends on the exact moment of drop break-off. The magnitude of the sawtooth wave is such that all unwanted droplets strike a gutter. The location of droplet impact on the gutter is sensed and the pulse train to the counter is changed by either adding or deleting a pulse to thereby change the time of the reset and initiation signals by a fraction of the droplet formation frequency.

    Abstract: A rotating, circular type carrier for a serial printer is equipped with axially movable type elements arranged on its periphery and having type members on one face, and a metal interposer disc with radial spokes is placed on the same axis of rotation such that the spokes line up with the other face of the elements; the inclined rear surfaces of the spokes are struck by a hammer so that the impact energy is transmitted from the hammer through a spoke to the corresponding element and the hammer is cammed back by the inclined surface of the rotating spoke.

    Abstract: A platen assembly for an impact printer comprises the combination of an impact transducer (28) between the backup plate (23) and the type band (11) of a printer and an impact isolator (29) interposed between the transducer and the type band. The transducer comprises a strip of force sensitive material. The strip extends over a plurality of print positions. Electrode means in contact with the surfaces of the force sensitive material form discrete impact zones aligned with the print hammers. One of the electrode means is a continuous conductive strip on one side of the force sensitive strip. Plural conductive pads on the other side of the strip form the discrete impact zones. The transducer element can be a foil using PVF2 with etched conductive patterns forming the electrodes.

    Abstract: An all-points addressable dot printer has rows of sloped parallel anvils on a rotating drum. Alternate rows slope in opposite directions for bi-directional printing with a single row of hammer blades. The blades which are spaced apart, are shifted bi-directionally in synchronism with the scanning motion of the anvils to print dots at all dot line points. A second embodiment has a reciprocating comb bar located between the blades and a print medium. Spring fingers on the comb bar have dot forming protrusions. The spring fingers are uniformly spaced with center spacing equal to the center distances between the blades. Comb bar motion is linear with time along the line segments. Blade motion is simple harmonic.
