    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method for executing merging operation to connect many partitions in a clustered computer system, its device, and a program product and a medium which holds the program product. SOLUTION: The device, program product, and method for executing the merging operation use messages sequenced by the clustered computer system to shift the execution of a merging protocol in a clustered group by generally guaranteeing the cancellation or completion of each holding program prior to the execution of the merging protocol until all holding protocols of respective partitions in the group are executed. From the point of view of each group member, the execution of the merging protocols is changed by impeding the processing of a merging request by such a member after all precedent reception requests which are being held are processed.

    Abstract: A clustered computer system, apparatus, program product and method utilize a group member-initiated shutdown process to terminate clustering on a node in an automated and orderly fashion, typically in the event of a failure detected by a group member residing on that node. As a component of such a process, node leave operations are initiated on the other nodes in a clustered computer system, thereby permitting any dependency failovers to occur in an automated fashion. Moreover, other group members on a node to be shutdown ar e preemptively terminated prior to local detection of the failure within those other group members, so that termination of clustering on the node may be initiated to complete a shutdow n operation.

    Abstract: An apparatus, program product and method initiate a restart of a node in a clustered computer system using a member of a clustering group that resides on a different node from that to be restarted. Typically, a restart operation is initiated by the member in response to a membership change message sent by another group member that is resident on the node to be restarted, with an indicator associated with the membership change message that indicates that a restart should be initiated. Typically, the restart is implemented in much the same manner as a start operation that is performed when a node is initially added to a cluster, with additional functionality utilized to preclude repeated restart attempts upon a failure of a prior restart operation.
