Abstract: 1299338 Selective printing INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 17 Sept 1971 [28 Dec 1970] 43343/71 Heading B6F A printer has continuously moving type character bearing elements 11 moving along a print line on one side of a document 14. Type hammers 24 located on the opposite side of the document are operable to impact the document 14 and a type ribbon 13 with selected ones of the type characters, which are themselves selectively advanced towards the hammers by an associated actuating means 31. The type hammers 24 are electromagnetically operated/ spring returned (Fig. 2). In Fig. 1, type levers 11a are disposed to be advanced as they pass selected print positions by the actuating means 31, which comprises a series of slides 32 which when advanced engage different ones of the type levers 11a as they pass by, and cam them into an advanced position. A plurality of electromagnets 35 have a common hold winding 36 linking the electromagnets 35 for holding the slides 32 in the retracted position against the bias of springs 34. Individual buck windings 37 are selectively energized to oppose the hold winding 36 so that selected slides 32 are released and advanced by springs 34. Each buck winding 37 is wired in parallel with the electromagnet winding (27, Fig. 3) of the associated hammer 24. Instead of having a hammer 24 for each character position, each hammer may cover two or more character positions. In an alternative embodiment, (Figs. 5 and 6), a plurality of type characters are advanced at the same time, but not in juxtaposed positions. This is achieved with a plurality of bars (50, 52, 54) movable towards and away from the document, each bar having cam surfaces (50a, 50b, 50c &c.) for engaging different type characters at spaced apart intervals greater than the spacing between adjacent type characters.
