    Abstract: Method and system alters audio data for a synthesized voice so that when it is produced on a speaker system, it appears to emanate from a specific spatial position. First, the voice is synthesized into a speech waveform from a set of stored data representative of a text string using standard techniques. The speech waveform is converted into analog signals for a right and left channel. Then, the analog signals to the right and left channels are altered according to position data stored with the text string so that the synthesized voice appears to originate at the specified spatial position when the analog signals are sent to a speaker system.

    Abstract: A word processing system is provided having a bidirectional printer with formatting capability. The system includes a word processor (11) having means for outputting a stream of sequential data readable in only one direction. The data comprises blocks of character data representative of the characters to be printed interspersed with blocks of control data representative of the format in which the characters are to be printed; each block of control data has an immediately preceding control block identifier. The bidirectional printer includes means (16, 18) for receiving the stream of sequential data, means (18,15) for scanning the stream of data and means (15) for inserting a control block identifier at the end of each control block which identifier corresponds to the Identifier preceding the control block, whereby the stream of sequential data is made readable in both the forward and reverse directions within the printer.

    Abstract: The sound of a plurality of a selected instrument is derived from a single digitized audio sample of the selected instrument by storing the digitized audio sample of the single selected instrument in a memory and manipulating copies of the digitized audio sample in parallel in a plurality of digital processors corresponding in number to the plurality of the selected instrument. Each of the digital processors processes the digital audio sample in a slightly different time variant manner to produce the effect of a plurality of instruments. The processed digital audio samples are summed into a single digital sample which is converted to an analog signal which is sent to a speaker to produce the sound of the plurality of the selected instrument.
