    Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for automatically selecting an optimum modem protocol in a distributed data processing system which includes a modem which supports multiple protocols which is coupled to a cellular communications system. Known cellular communications systems generate a Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) and a Service Access Tone (SAT) which may be utilized by a cellular telephone to determine the amplitude of a received signal and to optimize a path through the cellular communication system for voice communications. The Service Access Tone (SAT) is generally utilized to control the "hand off" of a communication session to a new cell and provides an indication of the quality of the existing path through the cellular communication system. After initiating communication between a first modem and a second modem, the method and system of the present invention automatically determines the channel quality within the cellular communication system by utilizing the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) and the Service Access Tone (SAT). These signals are analyzed, in conjunction with the bit error rate of the dotting sequence transmitted by the answering modem, to achieve an indication of the quality of the cellular communications channel. In response to an analysis of these factors a particular protocol may be selected which is optimum for existing channel conditions.

A preselected escape character is designated and inserted into a data stream to be applied to a modem in order to identify a selected command sequence which follows. A termination character is inserted into the data stream following the selected command sequence. Upon detection of the preselected escape character, the selected command sequence is coupled to a command processor within the modem and processed. In applications in which the modem is coupled between a data processing system and a cellular telephone communication channel, the selected command sequence may be utilized to transmit communication channel parameter status queries to a cellular telephone associated with the modem. In this manner, the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI), bit error rate, or other indications of communication channel status may be queried. An identical technique may be utilized to transmit a response to each such query to the data processing system, permitting real time display of cellular communication channel status information during data transfer.

    Abstract: A firewall isolates computer and network resources inside the firewall from networks, computers and computer applications outside the firewall. Typically, the inside resources could be privately owned databases and local area networks (LAN's), and outside objects could include individuals and computer applications operating through public communication networks such as the Internet. Usually, a firewall allows for an inside user or object to originate connection to an outside object or network, but does not allow for connections to be generated in the reverse direction; i.e. from outside in. The disclosed invention provides a special "tunneling" mechanism, operating on both sides of a firewall, for establishing such "outside in" connections when they are requested by certain "trusted" individuals or objects or applications outside the firewall. The intent here is to minimize the resources required for establishing "tunneled" connections (connections through the firewall that are effectively requested from outside), while also minimizing the security risk involved in permitting such connections to be made at all. The mechanism includes special tunneling applications, running on interface servers inside and outside the firewall, and a special table of "trusted sockets" created and maintained by the inside tunneling application. Entries in the trusted sockets table define objects inside the firewall consisting of special inside ports, a telecommunication protocol to be used at each port, and a host object associated with each port. Each entry is "trusted" in the sense that it is supposedly known only by individuals authorized to have "tunneling" access through the firewall from outside.

    Abstract: An external antenna 20 for use with a mobile battery powered data processing terminal 12 is disclosed, the terminal including a radio frequency communication device 36, such as a cellular telephone transceiver. Multiple antenna elements are mounted within a D-shaped flexible tubular member 38 having a very low dielectric constant which is then affixed to the external surface of the data processing terminal, utilizing an adhesive on the flat surface thereof. The flexible tubular member is preferably mounted along at least two edges of the data processing terminal display module such that spatial or polarization diversity for the multiple antenna elements may be provided. A coaxial connector 21 is utilized to couple the multiple antenna elements to a radio frequency communication device within the data processing terminal. In this matter, an external antenna may be added to a battery powered data processing terminal in a manner which will protect the antenna without interfering with radio frequency transmission or reception while simultaneously providing additional protection for the data processing terminal.
