Abstract: Probable machine maintenance can be detected using acoustic analysis of the machine. Microphones or acoustic sensors 20 are placed at a location e.g, shop floor, machine shop, near machines 14. They receive sound from the machines 14 and transfer acoustic data to a control system 70, where it is analysed with respect to a database 76 of specifications for the machine 14. If acoustic data for the machine 14 is determined as outside a specification, indicating a variation from the specification of the machine 14, a reason for the variation is determined in relation to an identified part. An alert (342, fig 4) is sent to a device (344, fig 4) with a recommendation or action regarding the identified part, based on the reason for the variation.
