Abstract: A flexible disk magnetic recording device wherein a large number of disks are separated by mechanical splitting means to form a space between any two selected disks for the insertion of a read/write transducing head. A restraint device is placed in bearing contact with the outer surface of the deflected portion of the disk stack at the periphery to create a bending moment in the deflected disks to buckle the disks. The restraint is placed at approximately 90 degrees subsequent to the splitting means in the direction of disk rotation, subtends an arc at the disk periphery of approximately 10 DEG -40 DEG and extends inwardly from the periphery one-half to two-thirds the radius.

Abstract: Multiple (e.g. 500) ultra-thin flexible storage disks are stacked in a closely spaced configuration between circular end plates and arranged for rotation together with the plates about a common axis. Recording surfaces of the rotating disks are deflected to successively expand (open) and contract (close) a selected interface and thereby provide recording access at the expanded interface. Separation of the selected interfacing surfaces for access is facilitated by maintaining a predetermined air pressure between the contracted disks which conditions the rotation of the disks to bistability in the contracted position. Thus only a small initiating force is required to expand any selected interface with the disks initially contracted. This reduces disk wear. Expansion of a selected interface is accelerated (for shortening access time) by applying vacuum to the disks in synchronism with the initiating force. Advantageously recording surfaces on both sides of the expanded interface rotate in generally flat planar paths, simplifying track location when both surfaces are subject to recording usage.

Abstract: A hollow tubular actuator device operates through an enclosure formed by aligned holes in multiple floppy type storage disks. The disks, separated by interposed ventilating spacers, are clamped between inflexible end plates in a closely spaced continually rotating stack assembly. The actuator preferably rotates with the stack and translates axially relative to the disks and spacers. The actuator has a slotted opening for transmitting variable pressure to a selected spacer (address) in the stack and thereby varies the aggregate pressure equilibrium in the stack due to centrifugal air flow. This acts to deflect the orbits of disks peripherally, on either side of the selected address space, forming a gap useful for obtaining external access to otherwise inaccessible storage surfaces adjacent the selected space.

Abstract: A resiliently suspended magnetic transducer (head) with distinctive convex contours is positioned to form a hydrodynamic bearing relative to the surfaces of randomly selected object discs in a continuously rotating laminar assembly of several hundred flexible discs. The normally contiguous discs are spread partially open by flexure at randomly selected interfaces. The head operates in the work space formed by such flexure. When the spring tension on the head suspension is suitably adjusted ("tuned") a hydrodynamically lubricated dimple intimately complementing the head contour forms in the rotational path of the object disc at head interface. The dimple displacement is generally greater than a disc thickness. A constant tension empirically determined enables the head to operate with satisfactory conformality and lubrication relative to all but a small number of end-positioned discs. By not using these end discs as working records the "TUNING-* tension may be pre-adjusted and maintained at a constant level. Alternately, the tension could be dynamically "tuned" or servoed to permit effective working operation relative to the end discs.

Abstract: Normally confined record surfaces of ultra-thin continuously rotating flexible magnetic record discs (nominal thickness 0.0017 inches), arranged in a laminar configuration of several hundred aggregately deformable discs, are accessed by aerodynamically stabilized flexure. The rotational path is partitioned by an axially translated airfoil blade at axial interface positions between randomly selected discs, and a semi-rigidly suspended contoured head is positioned independently of the partitioning blade in compliant relation to the surface of revolution traced by a disc surface at the interface. That surface conforms intimately to the convex head contour, separated from the head only by a very thin hydrodynamically generated air film. The arrangement thus provides high lineal density of bit recording. Tendency of the partitioned discs to flutter during the partitioning action and thereby potentially interfere with or delay positioning of the head, is counteracted by specific design features of the disclosed partitioning and stabilizing assemblies. The conformal position of the head is established at a peripheral zone of the interface record surface and glides radially to a selected track position of the record without interruption of the conformal relation. The aggregate assembly is characterized by volumetric efficiency (recording bit densities in excess of 1010 bits in a volume of 250 cubic inches) and access efficiency (1 sec). Plural partitioning and transducing mechanisms can be associated with a single pack; either as stand-by redundant elements or to provide access to record surfaces on opposite sides of partition interfaces. Plural packs are aggregatable on a common spindle or on separate spindles.

Abstract: 1,138,573. Tape reel cover. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 8 Aug., 1967 [8 Sept., 1966], No. 36323/67. Heading A4G. A cover for a reel of magnetic tape has side flanges covering the flanges of the reel, and the cover comprises two channel shaped bands 10 and 16 joined along their length leaving a tunnel between them and containing rubber seals 46 to contact the reel flanges. One side wall 14 of the cover may have fingers 15 for holding documents. A toggle latch can be closed to draw the cover tightly round the reel for storage. In use, the reel and cover are held on a machine in restrainers 48 and 50, with key 53 ensuring correct alignment. The latch 22, 24, 28 is opened either by hand or automatically with opening 25, so that the cover expands into grooves 58 in the restrainers, the end B to 20 of the outer band that is not attached to the inner band moving circumferentially apart from the end A to extend the length of the outer band by a length AB. As the toggle opens, the slide block 32 slides from one end of the window 36 in the outer band to the other, carrying with it the door 38 that extends about a quarter of the way round the circumference between the inner and outer bands. The door 38 slides in a clockwise direction, opening gaps 14 and 44 in the inner and outer bands to form an exit through the cover for the tape end, and aligning the gap 56 in the sliding door with the gap 54 in the tape already aligned with air inlet 52 in the restrainer 50, so that compressed air flows along the channel between the inner and outer bands until it reaches tangentially angled air jet holes 55 and 57. The holes 55 are directed in a clockwise direction, so that air flows clockwise round the reel, urging the end of the tape towards exit 14, 44 where the tape meets air from the holes 57 flowing counter-clockwise to peel off the end of the tape and urge it through the exit.
