    Abstract: A method of and apparatus for controlling gray scale in the charge sensitive media of a matrix printer by using constant amplitude write pulses. Their use is intended to overcome registration problems caused by constant movement of the charge sensitive recording media during the actual print cycle. This control method and apparatus are implemented by varying, as a function of the desired intensity of one or more pixels to be printed, the effective write time and the number of constant amplitude pulses applied to any one or more of a plurality of print electrodes over a complete write cycle. The normal printer write cycle is divided into a number of subdivisions, that number being a function of the maximum permissible allowable error that can be perceived by a human eye. Further, the write pulse waveforms used are derived so that there is not more than one write cycle subdivision difference at either termination point of any intensity pixel printed therewith.

    Abstract: The poles of a variable reluctance type linear stepper motor are arranged in an odd plural number of pairs and each pole is provided with two windings. For each pole pair, one winding of the pole of the particular pair is connected in series-aiding relationship with one of the windings of the other pole of the pair. The other two windings of the particular pair of poles are also connected in series-aiding relationship. The series connected windings are selectively energizable in predetermined stepping sequences for single phase, double phase and alternate single and double phase energizing operational modes. As a result, relative motion is provided between the pole structure of the motor and its variable reluctance member. The directions of energization of the respective two series connected windings of each particular pole pair are in opposition with respect to each other. The energization is such that the change of direction of the flux through the poles is minimized between steps, thereby providing a concomitant reduction in electrical and/or heat losses.

    Abstract: @ A high performance, low cost variable reluctance stepper motor has an integral structure (10) with a ring (11) and a plurality of aligned salient pole members (12). A plurality of teeth (14) are located on the face of each pole member (12). Windings (13) are disposed on alternate ones of the pole members and a high impedance means (19) isolates the pole members from one another. A rotor with a plurality of teeth (16) and a plurality of holes (18) disposed thereon coacts with the pole members (12) and is moved in a step fashion by the sequential energization of the windings (13). The flux generated by the energization of the windings (13) is confined to a short path and coupling to the remainder of the structure is negligible. Recesses (20) positioned symmetrically around the structure enhance flux splitting and reduce adjacent flux coupling.

    Abstract: A serial line printer uses a linear stepper motor of the variable reluctance type in which the toothed stator bar acts as a guide and support for the print mechanism carrier. Sensor elements movable with the carrier sense the presence of the teeth of the stator bar and generate timing signals usable for controlling operation of the printer and the motion of the carrier. The pitch of the teeth in the stator bar is proportional to the spacing of the print locations in a line of print.

    Abstract: A magnetic field generator (10) contains means (12) for concentrating lines of magnetic flux, and a magneto resistive element (16) connected to the concentrating device. Two flux couplers (22, 24) are connected to the magneto resistive element and are arranged out of phase with one another with respect to the protuberances of a transducer grid (30), which acts as a reference position scale. The flux couplers modulate flux distribution between the concentrating device and the transducer grid, so that the resulting changes in the resistivity of the magneto resistive elements generate an analog position signal.
