Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cordless modem including a pair of radio units interfacing to a standard data/fax modem in order that the user of a personal computer can connect to a telephone line by radio. SOLUTION: One of the pair of the radio units 32 and 34 is set to be a remote unit 32 interfacing to a modem housed in a PC(personal computer) and the other is set to be a base station unit 34 connected to a standard wall telephone jack. By this solving way, a user obtains the convenience and freedom of using the PC, a lap top, a personal digital assistant(PDA), etc., within the range of 100 to 200m from the telephone jack without the interference of a code. When a signal intensity between one pair of the radio units 32 and 34 is not more than a prescribed threshold value, an alarm on the remote unit informs the user of it.

Abstract: The antenna is a hybrid microstrip and reflector antenna having a planar patch antenna mounted to an upper surface of an insulated planar substrate. The substrate is coupled to a ground plane by means of one or more insulated coupling means (4), so as to form an airgap (10) therebetween. A coaxial cable (13) connectable to a transceiver is coupled to the bottom surface of the ground plane (2) at the outer conductor thereof and the inner conductor is coupled to a feed pin (9) which passes through the ground plane and protrudes through the surface of the patch. The feed pin is secured to the patch by means of soldering.

Abstract: An antenna is integrated into the laptop to increase the efficiency, convenience and ruggedness of radio frequency transmission. The antenna extends from the laptop's cover when in use for maximum efficiency but retracts when not in use for ruggedness and convenience. The antenna is a multi-modal antenna to permit efficient transmission and reception in more than one range of frequencies. The multi-modal antenna is made up of multiple segments for transmitting and receiving at different frequencies that are matched to a single terminating circuit.

'THIS ARRANGEMENT ALLOWS THE USER THE CONVENIENCE AND FREEDOM OF USING A PC, LAPTOP, PERSONAL DIGITAL ASSISTANT, ETC., WITHIN SEVERAL HUNDRED FEET OF A PHONE JACK WITHOUT BEING ENCUMBERED BY A CORD. A WARNING ALARM (61) ON THE REMOTE UNIT INFORMS THE USER WHEN THE SIGNAL STRENGTH BETWEEN THE RADIO PAIR IS BELOW A THRESHOLD VALUE. ADDITIONALLY, THE BASE UNIT MAY BE EQUIPPED WITH TWO SPATIALLY SEPARATED ANTENNAS (70, 70') TO HELP MITIGATE THE EFFECTS OF SIGNAL FADING.
