Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multichannel acoustooptical modulator(MCAOM) using a crystal having plural mounting surfaces for an acoustic modulator and to provide a laser device utilizing the MCAOM. SOLUTION: Mounting surfaces 12b, 12d are oriented so that acoustic modulators (13a, 13b) mounted on them so as to generate sound fields 41, 42 intersecting an incident beam 16 at a common angle that is a Bragg's angle α. The MCAOM of two channels use two modulators 13a, 13b. Channels are increased in this manner. A corresponding 1-st order beam 16 is diffracted by activating the modulators 13a, 13b. Since the sound fields of respective modulators 13a, 13b intersect the incident laser beam 16 with intrinsic directions, the 1-st order beam is diffracted (14a, 14b) in respective intrinsic aces. A device utilizing the MCAOM controls respective channels in accordance with purposes by controlling driving signals to the modulators with an electronic means. Intensities and directions of the beams re controlled by amplitudes of the driving signals and modulations of frequencies.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser device capable of directing diffracted beams generated from initial laser beam and having high equality toward both surfaces of a substrate simultaneously. SOLUTION: Diffracted beams are generated with energies sufficient to form texture bumps to be used on the substrate of a magnetic disk 95 by softening spots being on surfaces of the substrate. The beams are generated by a multichannel acoustic optical modulator (MCAOM) which has at least two channels (here, two channel modulator (DCAOM)). The crystal of the MCAOM has at least two mounting surfaces oriented so as to intersect an incident laser beam 16 at a common angle, that is, a Bragg angle (α). A corresponding 1-st order beam 16 is diffracted (14a, 14b) by activating arbitrary modulators 13a, 13b. The diffracted beams are preferably generated by generating two beams whose pulse intensities exceed 50% of the incident beam and which can be directed toward counter surfaces of the substrate in order to uniformize textures extremely while alternating driving signals to the modulators.

Abstract: A laser system concurrently directs highly equivalent diffracted beams (14a,14b) derived from an initial laser beam (16) to both sides of a substrate. The diffracted beams are generated with sufficient energy to soften spots on the surfaces of a substrate (95) to form texture bumps as are used on substrates for magnetic disks. The diffracted beams are generated by a multichannel acousto-optic modulator (MCAOM) having at least two channels. The crystal (12) in the MCAOM has at least two mounting faces oriented so that the acoustic transducers (13a,13b) mounted thereon generate acoustic fields which intersect the incident laser beam at a common angle. i.e.. the Bragg angle. Energising any of the transducers causes a corresponding first order beam to be diffracted out. Preferably the diffracted beams are generated by alternating driving signals to transducers to produce two beams with pulse intensity greater than 50% of that of the incident beam which can be directed to opposite sides of the substrate (95) for extremely uniform texturing.

Abstract: A multichannel acousto-optic modulator (MCAOM) uses a crystal (12) with a plurality of mounting faces for acoustic transducers (13a,13b). The mounting faces are oriented so that the acoustic transducers mounted thereon generate acoustic fields which intersect the incident laser beam at a common angle, i.e., the Bragg angle. A two channel MCAOM uses two transducers. Extension to any higher number of channels follows accordingly. Energising any of the transducers (13a,13b) causes a corresponding first order beam to be diffracted out. Since the acoustic field for each transducer intersects the incident beam with a unique orientation, each first order beam is diffracted out on a unique axis. A system utilising an MCAOM has electronic means for controlling the driving signals to the transducers to control each channel as required by the application. Amplitude and frequency modulation (26) of the driving signals (25) allows the intensity and angle of the beams to be controlled.
