Abstract: A rotating head mandrel is contoured so that in cross-section the mandrel appears similar to the shape of an eyeball. Two mandrels are axially aligned for supporting a tape helically wrapped about the mandrels. Between the two mandrels is a rotor carrying a magnetic head. The magnetic tape helically wraps the two mandrels in the region of the rotor. The path of the rotating head relative to the tape is a transverse track at an acute angle to the longitudinal direction of the tape. The peak of the eyeball contour or cam shape contour of the mandrel is located at the entry and exit points of the tape as it helically wraps the mandrels. The peak gives the tape additional height relative to the rotating head and prevents the head from nicking the edge of the tape as it crosses the edges of the helically wrapped tape. The surfaces of the mandrels have holes through which air may be forced to provide a hydrostatic air bearing between the tape and the mandrels. The pattern of the holes on each mandrel is triangular with additional holes at the tip of the long leg of the triangle, along the short leg of the triangle and regularly spaced inside the triangle.

Abstract: A cartridge stores a magnetic recording tape on two reels which are rotated when the cartridge is mounted on a drive spindle. Reels are prevented from turning inside the unmounted cartridge by a brake which is released when the cartridge is mounted. In one embodiment, the brake frictionally bears against the reel, and in another embodiment, fingers on the brake engage reel locking fingers. In both cases, the reel is released when the drive spindle disengages the brake from the reel.

Abstract: A PROCEDURE FOR TIGHTENING TAPE WRAPS ON A SPINDLE During a search operation in a rotating magnetic head tape transport, the tape is transported from a supply spool via guides and a vacuum column past the rotating head read/write station to a take-up spool. As the tape is wound onto the take-up spool in layer-by-layer convolutions, air is entrapped between the layers. The entrapped air forms a layer of air film and as a result the tape is loosely wound on the take-up spool. A "Hard Step" voltage is generated and is applied to the capstan motor at the end of the search operation to tighten any loose wraps caused by the air entrapment during the search.

Abstract: The diskette drive described herein reads and writes information on a flexible magnetic disk stored in a rigid diskette cartridge. The drive contains apparatus for loading and registering the cartridge in the drive without the assistance of a loading tray or cartridge carrier. The disk drive spindle, the recording head and cartridge position registration pins all protrude into the insertion path for the cartridge. The spindle and pins are shaped and positioned so that the cartridge will not strike the recording head as it is inserted. Spring fingers are provided to bias the cartridge down against the spindle and the registration pins. When the cartridge is fully inserted, it snaps into a registered position over the pins, the spindle and the recording head. In addition the cartridge contains a truncated corner that cooperates with a blocking member in the insertion path to prevent the cartridge from being improperly inserted.
