Abstract: 1,200,572. Magnetic disc cartridges. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 26 March, 1969, No. 15818/69. Heading G5R. A cartridge for a magnetic disc assembly 3 comprises a cover 2a having a bottom portion 2b permitting coupling of the assembly to a drive unit and a transducer side opening adapted to be covered by a removable base 4. As shown, one or more discs 3 are clamped by a plate 9 to a hub having a flexible portion 10 locatable over a machine spindle and carrying a magnetic ring 6 co-operable either with magnets 5 in the base, to hold the base and cover together, or with magnets (23, Fig. 4, not shown) in a drive unit, to transmit drive to the discs. A handle 8, foldable into a well in the cover, is raised to lift a bar 13 connected by pillars 14 to a plate 15 so as to engage and lift the clamping plate 9 to thereby break the attraction of the ring 6 and magnets. The handle includes a latch (Figs. 5, 6, not shown) allowing the handle to be raised without the bar 13 for carrying, and a lock preventing the latch from being released when the handle is raised. The cover includes further side apertures (20, 21, Fig. 3, not shown) for brushes and for ensuring correct orientation, and the base has a filtered air vent 38 to assist removal of the base which may then be clamped atop the cover. The cartridge contains a magnetic shield.

Abstract: 1,237,016. Supporting recording &c. heads. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 22 Feb., 1969, No. 9664/69. Heading G5R. A transducer 18A is moved into flying relation to a record by moving a shaft 12 carrying a stop 14 and a stressed spring 13 until the force exerted by the spring on the stop is completely transferred to the transducer. A Bowden cable 16 rotates the shaft 12 against a restoring spring 20 and the transducer is mounted on a resilient support so that the system is fail-safe. The relative position of the spring 13 and stop 14 is pre-set during manufacture to establish a desired loading force. A number of transducers co-operating with opposite sides of magnetic discs may be moved simultaneously by a solenoid-operated shaft coupled to the shafts 12 of respective loading devices (Fig. 5, not shown).
