Abstract: A magnetic tape cartridge (11) is shown in which a length of magnetic tape (12) is wound on a reel hub (10) with the free end of the tape permanently connected to a generally rectangular-shaped leader block (13). The cartridge completely surrounds the reel of magnetic tape except for an opening (16) provided at one corner of the cartridge (11). This opening (16) permits tape (12) wound on the reel to be unwound as the leader block is moved away from the cartridge, preferably by an automatic threading mechanism. The cartridge comprises a leader block receiving well in which the leader block (13) is a snug fit. The walls (33, 51) of the well have the opening (16) in them through which the tape enters and leaves the cartridge. The walls (53, 33) of the leader block well are arranged to engage the leading and trailling walls of the leader block in a clamping relationship and help retain the block in the well in a position in which the opening (16) in the cartridge is substantially sealed by the leader block to prevent contamination from entering the cartridge when the cartridge is not in use. To remove the leader block from the well, it must initially be swivelled about boss (60) providing a mechanical advantage.

Abstract: A tape spool and cover are latched together by a tubular sleeve arrangement. A hollow core tape spool has an inner frustro-conical camming surface adjacent an axially outwardly facing shoulder. A releasable latch includes a unitary resilient sleeve inserted into the hollow core and is cammed radially inwardly for creating radial outward forces on the opposite sleeve end outside the spool. A first axial end portion of the sleeve has a first type locking resilient finger extending out of the hollow core and a second type resilient finger in locking engagement with the hollow core tape spool. A radially inwardly extending annular rib divides the first and second axial end portions to provide a bending moment transfer ring. The slots defining the axially extending fingers extend to and preferably into the rib for providing a moment bridge for transferring the radial inward compression on the second axial end portion to a radially outwardly exerting force in the first axial end portion. It is preferred that such slots terminate on or near a common circumferential line extending around the sleeve. The outer end portion of the first type of fingers includes a latching shoulder, plus a camming surface for enabling radial inward camming all first type fingers for enabling releasable engagement between the tape spool and a cylindrical cover.

The reel has releasable fingers 52 with cam follower surfaces 62 to be engaged by the release tool 74 which comprises an annular cam surface 76. The surfaces 62 preferably lie on a surface of revolution about the hub axis and are preferably also curved in a plane through the hub axis; the cam surface 76 on the release tool is preferably similarly formed. In a further embodiment, the tool 74 includes resilient fingers which extend into the hub to engage a surface irregularity on the internal surface of the reel to releasably grip the reel. Abstract: A magnetic head arm assembly comprises a lightweight, low inertia frustoconical arm (10) to which a magnetic head (12) is mounted at one end. The other end of the head arm is coupled to an end of a rotatable shaft (14), by which the arm can be pivoted. An electrical coil (16) which is disposed within a magnetic field supplied by permanent magnets (20,22) is fastened to the other end of the shaft (14). The pivotable magnetic head arm assembly may be vertically adjusted to control flying height and angularly adjusted relative to the surface of a magnetic disk to correct for azimuth variations.

In use, external means (not shown), apply axial pressure to the spool outer flanges 30, 31 against the action of spring 32 whereby flanges 34 are freed from engagement with side walls 22, 23 and the spool is free to rotate. The hub of spool 14 comprises two similar parts 36, 37 which lockingly engage securing the inner end of the web 15. Spring 22 is disposed in axially extending recess 38 within the hub.

Abstract: An automatically openable tape cartridge having an integrally formed snap latch. One end of the tape within the cartridge is secured to the free end of a closable lid. Upon displacing a longitudinal wall of the cartridge adjacent the free end, camming action causes the lid to snap open pulling the tape out. Mating cam surfaces on the displaced longitudinal wall and the free end of the lid forces the lid open. On the end walls of the cartridge are two inwardly opening grooves or latch-receiving means. These receive latching scallops on the ends of the lid. The scallops ride over the cartridge end walls. The cartridge contains a spool having axially movable flanges for facilitating automatic handling of the cartridge and the contained magnetic tape.

Abstract: A magnetic tape cartridge (11) comprises a device (16) settable to prevent inadvertent recording and thus erasure on the tape. The device (16) comprises a shaft (21) carrying a control disc (18) intermediate its length. The disc 18 either masks a sensor (23) from a light source (22) or allows illumination of the sensor according to its angular setting. The unit (16) is rotatably mounted in a sleeve (12) formed integraliy with a part (11) of the cartridge. The unit 16 has a screwdriver slot (17c) and an indicator (17b). The sensor (23) is connected in a read/write control circuit.
