    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system for improving the accuracy of a full-winding angle. SOLUTION: This method includes the step of operating a tape system for generating or reproducing an electrical signal from a tape into a head, the step of properly increasing/decreasing a tape full-winding angle until a signal from the tape head is reproduced or set to zero; and the step of increasing the full-winding angle to a desired angle to be measured by a signal from the head or moving a tape support by a fixed quantity. A tape recording/reading system having a full-winding angle to be adjusted is used by applying the method. This system is provided with one or more roller provided on a shaft to be adjusted, having a part made eccentric or offset in an axial direction for supporting the roller.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tape head designed for transducing data on a magnetic recording tape that is subjected to tape dimensional changes.
    SOLUTION: The tape head includes two or more arrays of transducer elements having different transducer spacing distances corresponding to different track spacing distances to be transduced. One of the transducer arrays can be used for transducing the tape under nominal tape track spacing conditions. Another transducer array can be used for transducing the tape when the tape track spacing is reduced due to the tape shrinkage. Still another transducer can be used for transducing the tape when the tape track spacing is enlarged due to tape expansion.

    Abstract: An apparatus according to one embodiment includes a module having a tape bearing surface, a magnetic transducer in a thin film region, and an edge closest to the transducer. A guide is positioned relative to the edge for inducing tenting of a moving magnetic recording tape above a tape tenting region of the tape bearing surface. The magnetic transducer is positioned along the tape tenting region. The magnetic transducer is positioned a distance from a location on the tape bearing surface directly under a peak that is more than one-fourth the length from the location directly under the peak to the edge closest thereto.

    Abstract: An apparatus includes a module 801 having a tape bearing surface 808, a magnetic transducer 809 in a thin film region 814, and an edge 804 closest to the transducer. A guide 862 is positioned relative to the edge for inducing tenting 810 of a moving magnetic recording tape 802 above a tape tenting region 813 of the tape bearing surface. The magnetic transducer is positioned along the tape tenting region. The wrap angle α may be 0.1 to 1.5 degrees and the tape bearing surface may be planar. The guide may be a roller, a second module or an integral outrigger. The magnetic transducer may be a tunneling magnetoresistive sensor (TMR). The magnetic transducer may be positioned toward and edge of the tape tenting region at a point of closest approach of the tape and the bearing surface. Positioning of the transducer under the tenting region enables adjustment of heat to tape spacing during building of the head or when the head is in a drive and may reduce head-tape friction, wear, out-of-tape fluctuations and diminish the impact of asperities from the tape on the head.
