Abstract: 1,130,072. Selective printers. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 17 Oct., 1966 [18 Oct., 1965], No. 46234/66. Heading B6F. A flexible harness to support a plurality of print wire cables 28 in a wire printer comprises a ribbon of resilient flexible material, e.g. polyurethane, in which the cables are embedded. The cables 28 carrying the print wires 29 extend in a vertical plane at a print control mechanism 10 until they get to the print head end 27 of the ribbon where they are formed into shape required to form characters. The ribbon has an increased thickness at each end A, G and is thinnest in the centre part DC, so that flexibility decreases gradually towards the ends which are attached to the print head and control mechanism. The ribbon is formed as an I-section and has vertical reinforcing ribs at spaced intervals.

Abstract: 1,174,645. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 1 May, 1967 [16 May, 1966], No. 19930/67. Heading B6F. Continuously rotating type-wheel machines.- Type 12 pivotally mounted on the peripheral surface of a type-wheel 11 are selectively moved out of normal inoperative path into the path of a guide 75 whereby further rotation of the typewheel causes an impression stroke. Type-wheel construction.-The type-wheel 11 comprises a hub 30, Fig. 2, a radial flange 32 with a plurality of fins 33 within each adjacent pair an individual type 12 is pivotally supported. The type 12 has a low-friction guide surface which centres the type within the fins, and a type slug 43 with a character 44. A projection 45 co-operates with the guide 75 for directing the type member 12 to print position. The type-wheel also comprises a toroidal permanent electromagnet 50 having a plurality of wedge-shaped outer polepieces 51 and corresponding polepieces 52 held together by epoxy resin 53 and secured to the hub 30 by screw 55. Type-selecting action.-The type 12 are all normally held in a non-operative path by the permanent magnets but a selected type is moved into an operative path by an electro - magnet 71-73 which opposes the force of the permanent magnet and a spring 57 moves the type 12 to one side so that guiding edges (76) of the guide 75 hold the type clear of the permanent magnets. A second guide comprising an edge 79 on metal cam 78 which engages the projection 45 on the selected type to positively direct the type to point of impact. A further cam or reset ramp 82 engages the type slug 43 on both sides of the embossed character 44 and returns the type to non-operative position. Disposition of characters.-The characters are displaced progressively around the wheel to allow for the continuous feed of the platen carriage 13. Platen carriage.-The platen carriage is positively and continuously moved transversely across the printing wheel or guide rod 107 by means of a linkage 105, 104, pivot 103 and a follower 101 oscillated by a groove 100 in a cam 99, driven by gear and worm 97, 96 from a motor driven belt drive 23, 22, 21. A one-revolution clutch may be included. Carriage-return.-This is effected by the same cam 99 that effects letter-spacing. Line - spacing.-Automatic and adjustable line-spacing is effected when the carriage-return movement causes a roller 137 to ride up a ramp 136, and via adjustable linkage 145, 138-142, pivot or gripper mechanism 119, 118, 117. Web-feed.-The web 14 is fed over the platen 93 by the gripper mechanism. A blade 115 prevents return movement, and the feed bar 117 may be used as a tear-off bar.
