Abstract: An input pattern is assigned to one of a plurality of categories by serial associative transformations of an input data string to an output code. Substrings of the data string derived from the pattern are applied as serial search arguments to an associative store containing transformation codes for particular bit sequences. The transformation codes are then used as search arguments for an associative store containing tables for producing a second code from particular sequences of the transformation codes. Additional code levels operate similarly to output a pattern-category code. Stored control keys further control the associative-store operations. A zone-clock associative store detects significant transform-code configurations, and records how much of each pattern has been processed.

Abstract: 1,242,039. Pattern recognition. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 30 April, 1970, No. 20836/70. Heading G4R. A pattern recognition system comprises input means for reducing an input pattern into the form of a bit string, a plurality of associative memory units having their inputs connected in parallel to the output of the input means arranged to respond if the bit string conforms to words or combinations of the words stored in the memories, and output means connected to the output of the associative memories for producing output signals representative of patterns determined by the outputs of the associative memories. The bit string is supplied (for matching) to the associative memories via a further select" associative memory which supplies successive parts of the string in turn together with control keys. The associative memories may be as in Specification 1,186,703 (referred to). A control and timing unit including a read-only store and a clocking system, controls the associative memories &c., supplying control keys to the associative memories which achieve match only in the memories for which they were intended. The number of associative memories connected in parallel can be increased without altering the rest of the system, and any of these memories can be extended by adding further memories in series. Matching in these associative memories (to identify the pattern) can be done with the output of a further associative memory used first to identify features of the pattern. If the bit string is parallel-by-bit, the "select" memory may be simplified or dispensed with. A buffer store may precede the select" memory. The bit string may come from a flying spot scanner.
