Abstract: A cursor control pointing device for controlling a computer screen cursor includes a post, a rigid base for the post and thick film resistors on the sides of the post operating as strain gages to sense sideways and front-to-back flexure of the post. The thick film resistors are piezoresistive, changing resistivity with strain. Two resistor divider networks are formed, one with right and left side resistors to sense X-axis flexure, and one with front and back resistors to sense Y-axis flexure. The voltages divided by the networks are processed to form a cursor control signal to move the cursor in X and Y coordinates on the computer display screen.

Abstract: Touch sensing direct input data display apparatus wherein display screen (1) is directly and solely supported within a housing by stiff springs (5) having essentially uniaxial freedom of motion. Strain gauge sensors (13) are applied directly to the springs (5) and are connected in a full Wheatstone bridge sensing circuit. The outputs of the sensors (13) are fed to a calculating device for calculating the X, Y and Z coordinate information relative to the point on the face of the display (1) which has been pushed or touched. The Z component is of total force and the X any Y components give the two dimensional location for the application of the force measured in the Z axis. The stiff springs (5) allow very little deflection to occur under normal touch imposed forces on the display screen (1). They permit essentially uniaxial motion only in the Z axis. The apparatus is mechanically robust and may be shipped and subjected to dropping or impact loads normally encountered in shipping without damage, has a relatively high natural frequency of vibration and produces high level, relatively continuous output signals for use.
