Abstract: PURPOSE: To improve the durability at the boundary between the head and disk of a disk file by forming relatively thin carbon protective films on the air bearing surfaces of a slider. CONSTITUTION: The assembled disk file is maintained in an environment having relative humidity(RH) higher than about 30% and is subjected to cycles of on/off at frequencies sufficient for maintaining the slider in the state of maintaining the contact with the disk provided with the carbon protective films. As a result of such start and stop cycles, the carbon is moved from the disk provided with the carbon protective films to the air bearing surfaces of the slider until the thickness thereof is made smaller than about 50mμ. The carbon films are adhered to the air bearing surfaces of the slider in such a manner and, thereafter, the disk file is maintained at the relatively low humidity, by which the operation is made possible without impairing the durability of the disk. As a result, the durability at the boundary surface between the head and disk of the disk file is improved.
