Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a cost required for transmission, disk space and mail time by efficiently conducting transmission and reception of electronic mails including attachments in a communications system. SOLUTION: A receiver placed on the way separates the attachment of an electronic mail message from the electronic mail and stores the attachment. Furthermore, the attachment is replaced with reference information before the electronic mail message is sent to a recipient and the reference information is distributed to the recipient. According to this invention, the attachment of an electronic mail is stored at a place as close as possible to the recipient and a sender side does not need to revise a component for processing the electronic mail and the network.

Abstract: Method for processing e-mail in a computer system where there is one or more receiving computers (102) between a senders and addressees. Method has the following steps: separation and storage of any attachments from the e-mail in the intermediate mail-server computer (102) and replacement of the attachment with a reference to it before sending on the e-mail to the addressee. Independent claims are made for a system for processing e-mail according to the above method a software application that can be loaded in computer memory to carry out the method steps and a computer system for use with the software application.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method and system for handling E-mail messages in a communication system. According to the present invention in a communication system comprising one or several intermediate receivers any attachment in an E-mail message is detached in the intermediate receiver and stored. Furthermore the attachment is replaced with a reference to the stored attachment before the E-mail message is forwarded to the recipient. With the use of the present invention the attachment of the E-mail stays always as close as possible to the receiver location. Changes to E-mail handling components on the sender's side and in the transmitting network are not necessary. Since storage and transmission of redundant data is suppressed, there are considerable savings of transmission cost, disk space, and mailing time.
