    Abstract: Improved image storage and display devices of the type which includes a layer of phosphor material which is stimulated to emit light through photoluminescence. The intensity of emitted light is varied by applying an electric field to the phosphor layer. The field may be applied to the phosphor layer by sandwiching the layer between a layer of insulating material and a layer of electrically conductive material and subjecting the insulator to an electron beam. To alter the field strength at selected locations a writing electron beam is focussed on the insulator at these selected locations. In the alternative, the phosphor layer may be covered on one surface with insulation materials forming a charge trap and the phosphor and insulation layers sandwiched between sets of orthognal electrically conductive strips. Selective field alteration is accomplished by X-Y addressing an orthognal pair of conductive strips.

    Abstract: 1430854 Luminescence materials INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 29 Nov 1973 [26 Dec 1972] 55357/73 Heading C4S [Also in Division H1] An image storage and display device comprises a layer of phosphor sand wiched between an electrically insulating layer and an electrically conductive layer, together with means for causing the phosphor to emit light through photoluminescence, and means for applying an electric field to the phosphor to modify the intensity of the photoluminescence. As described, the device of Fig. 3 is composed of a layer 2 of ZnO phosphor with, on its upper surface, successive insulating layers 4 and 30 of SiO 2 and Si 3 N 4 , respectively, the relative thickness of these two layers permitting charge trapping at their mutual interface, the resulting field across the phosphor modifying its photoluminescence due to the ultra-violet source 14. The device has a cross-bar addressing system X 1 , X 2 , X 3 ... Y 1 ,Y 2 ,Y 3 ..., to a desired pair of conductors of which simultaneous pulses -v/2 and +v/2 are applied, where the voltage required to produce tunnelling of carriers from the phosphor to the SiO 2 -Si 3 N 4 interface lies between v/2 and v. A discharge tube embodiment is also disclosed (see Division H1).
