Abstract: 993,113. Statistical apparatus. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. April 23, 1964 [May 16, 1963], No. 16778/64. Heading G4M. A record card, Fig. 1, has zone 14a-14c in which the characters 0-9 are printed in red, and further zones 12a-12c in which groups of code marks corresponding to these characters are printed in black, the code illustrated being binarycoded decimal with an even parity check bit. Information is recorded on the card, e.g. by a meter reader, by making a black mark over the appropriate characters in zones 14a-14c.. The card is sensed by passing it beneath a group of ten photo-cells which are insensitive to red light. As the black line Z1 passes the photocells, AND gate 47, Fig. 5, produces a pulse to trigger a timing circuit 50, and a synchronizing pulse is transmitted to remote data-processing equipment through OR gate 69. Trigger SS1 enables the AND gates 61 in a set of latches 60-0 to 60-9 so that when the black mark in zone 14a is sensed the corresponding trigger 63 is set to enable AND gate 65, and immediately afterwards AND gates 67 are enabled by trigger SS3. Pulses derived from the code marks in zone 12a corresponding to selected character are then passed by AND gate 67 in the appropriate latch 60 and are transmitted to the data-processing equipment. Finally, trigger SS2 resets the set trigger 63 and the system is ready to start a fresh cycle when the next black line Z1 is sensed. The card shown in Fig. 2 is marked in zones 34 to indicate alphabetic or numeric characters. In sensing such a card, relay M-1, Fig. 5 is energized to enable gates 67 during the complete sensing cycle. When the mark in zone 34 is sensed the corresponding trigger 63 is set as before, but the pulse derived from this mark is now also passed through gates 65, 67 and forms part of the code group transmitted.
