Abstract: The invention concerns electrophotographic apparatus provided with an optical photoconductive (OPC) conveying means charged with an image pattern of toner and improved transfer means including an insulating transfer member for effecting a more positive transfer of toner from the OPC to a copy sheet. In one form, the additional transfer member is a Mylar* (*Trademark of Du Pont & Co.) flap partially covering the transfer corona station and, in another case, a nylon or Dacron* mesh covering the entire transfer station. A negative potential is established on the transfer corona wires to charge the paper for effecting transfer of toner and, at the same time, to charge the additional transfer member to repel the paper and insure a closer contact with the OPC material.

Abstract: A failsafe system is provided for a copying machine which will operate in response to one of a plurality of sensing devices to stop the xerographic copying process, immediately deenergize the fuser assembly and energize an auxiliary drive system which will merely return the reciprocatable document carriage to the home position so that the original document may be retrieved. When the document carriage reaches the home position, the auxiliary drive system will be shut off with the cover latching mechanism deactivated to prevent the initiation of further cycles until such time as repairs are made and the system is reset for normal operation.

Abstract: A document feed mechanism for a copier machine incorporating an automatic document feed (ADF) with a semi-automatic document feed (SADF) and enabling the SADF to interrupt the ADF. The ADF tray upon which a stack of documents to be copied is placed is situated directly above the viewing station. A wave generator (shingler) paper feed means fans out the topmost sheets on the stack and up a ramp until the topmost sheet enters closed nip rollers. The nip rollers, together with aligner rollers and a drive belt, move the sheet around a substantially 180.degree. bend and onto the viewing station. Second sheet feed are prevented by a restraint pad positioned between the nip rollers and the exit of the ramp, the top of the restraint pad being above the nip of the nip rollers so that the topmost sheet presses a second sheet downwardly into the restraint pad. The SADF feeds sheets onto the viewing station using the aligner rolls and the drive belt.
