Abstract: The impact time of an electrically driven-type element is directly sensed and employed to control a direct printer function, such as the impact drive itself or an ancillary printer function such as letter feed or data input control. Actual sensing of the impact point is preferably accomplished by observing the impact-force-induced polarity change of back EMF of a DC motor employed to drive the type element. Back EMF is also employed to control impact drive velocity.

Abstract: A cleaning apparatus for cleaning the residual toner image from an electrostatic plate of an electrostatic reproduction apparatus incorporates a continuous wiper member having an outer layer of a compliant material which has a resistivity of less than 10 8 ohm.- centimeters and an outer skin thereon. The wiper member is connected to ground. As the wiper member wipingly engages the toner particles, the toner partricles are mechanically dislodged from the surface of the electrostatic plate. Additionally, an image charge is produced on the outer skin surface of the conductive wiper member equal to but opposite in sign from the charge on the toner particles in proximity therewith. This image charge causes the toner particles to adhere to the skin surface as the wiper member moves away from the electrostatic plate regardless of the sign of the toner charge. A further cleaning member is utilized to remove the toner particles from the skin surface of the wiper member which travels in a closed loop past the electrostatic plate and the further cleaning member.

Abstract: APPARATUS FOR NEUTRALIZING TONER IN A NO CHARGE EXCHANGE TRANSFER In a no-charge-exchange transfer, the transfer sheet leaving a no-charge-exchange transfer roller contains little or no electrical charge except for the charged toner. Accordingly, the charged toner tends to explode off the sheet or migrate on the sheet due to like charge on the toner causing toner particles to repel each other. A neutralizing corona is provided adjacent the image side of the copy sheet. This corona is positioned after the nip of the transfer roller and before the copy sheet leaves the transfer roller. Ion emitted from the neutralizing corona reduce the charge on the toner particles to substantially zero. Thus, the toner particles no longer repel. Forces of adhesion hold the particles to the paper after the sheet leaves the transfer roller and proceeds to the fusing station.

Abstract: A toner usage sensing system for an electrostatic reproduction apparatus which utilizes multicomponent developer material including electrostatically charged toner to develop electrostatic latent images on a photosensitive plate directly senses the amount of toner consumed by the reproduction process. Since the average toner body charge (coulomb/gram) is constant for a given desired toner concentration, the weight of the electrostatically charged toner consumed in sensed by measuring the charge removed from the developer material during the reproduction process. The developer unit containing the developer material is electrically isolated from the remainder of the reproduction apparatus and grounded through a single connection. The current in the ground connection returns charge to the developer unit sufficient to replace the charge removed and is sensed to obtain a measurement of the toner consumed. A measured amount of toner is added to the developer material when a preselected amount of charge has been sensed as being removed. In one embodiment, a DC motor drives the toner replenisher and rotates an amount proportional to the sensed current thereby providing a mechanical storage of the incremental amounts of toner removed on widely spaced reproduction runs.

Abstract: TRIBOELECTRIC FILTER AND METHOD OF USING IT IN AN ELECTROPHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTER Airborne electrophotographic toner particles are filtered by a body of carrier beads of a material selected to develop a relatively high triboelectric charge upon contact by the toner particles. When the filtering capability of the body of carrier beads is exhausted, the carrier beads and the collected toner are simply mixed into the developer mix of a xerographic machine whereby the collected toner can be reused.
