Abstract: 1,079,558. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. July 12, 1965 [July 25, 1964], No. 29384/65. Heading B6F. Hammer mechanism.-In a printer having a hammer in each character position along a printing line, the hammers 11 are each resiliently mounted upon a pair of leaf-springs 12, 13 and cocked by an electromagnet coil 21 common to magnets in all character positions, actuation of selected hammers 11 being effected by energization of individual opposing electromagnet windings 24, 25 which thus allows these hammers to operate by spring tension. The cocking by the electromagnets is effected in conjunction with a cam which cyclicly moves all the magnets away from the platen and the magnets flexing all the hammers. The magnets are H-shape, the base of the H being directed to the platen while the top is adjustably secured on to mounting block 37. Pairs of clamps 39, Fig. 7 (not shown) secure the magnets in pairs on to the block and by means of an elliptical key 43 the jaws of the lamps may be opened for adjustment of the position of the electromagnets. Anti-rebound device.-A resilient stop member 66, Fig. 9, is attached to a momentum absorbing mass 63 of the same weight as the hammer 11. The mass 63 is attached by a rubber layer 64 to a bar 65. When the hammers are to be operated the stop members are raised from behind 4 shoulders 67 on the hammers 11 by a pivoting action of the bar 65 mounted on the top of a pivoted lever 71, Fig. 2 rocked by a follower and cam early in a print cycle. After the hammers are cocked the stops rest under the influence of weights 77 on the tops 76 of projections 67 on the hammers. Rebound is prevented by the stops falling behind the shoulders 67 after impression.

Abstract: 1,010,983. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Aug. 11, 1964 [Aug. 24, 1963], No. 32653/64. Heading B6F. Type-wheel machines; type-band machines; type-bar machines; hammer-impression mechanism; electric signal input arrangements.- A high-speed selective printer used for output units of data processing machines and having types mounted on a rotary-type carrier, a chain or type bars, is provided with an electromagnetically operated drive mechanism for a plurality of hammers 1 comprising a corresponding plurality of electromagnets 11 for each of which the print hammers 1 are adapted to form an armature in that the hammers carry two armature yokes 12, 13 of soft magnetic material, said electromagnets exerting on said hammers a force in the impression direction. Each hammer 1 comprises a bar of rectangular cross-section having a hammer head on its front end and the hammer is mounted on a pair of leaf springs 3, 4 serving also to return the hammer to its rest position after impression. The hammer also carries two U- shaped armature yokes 12, 13, the polar surfaces 14 are inclined and co-operate with like polar surfaces 15 of the electromagnet 11 having coils 16, 17 energized with current pulses J2 and J1 respectively. The pulse J1 is of short duration but higher amplitude, whereas the pulse J2 is of longer duration and is ineffective by itself to displace the hammer into its printing position. For impression, both coils 16, 17 are energized simultaneously by said pulses J1 and J2, but when the short pulse J1 terminates on completion of impression the pulse J2 produces a magnetic force retarding the return movement of the hammer, thus preventing rebound. The return movement is limited by a buffer stop 9 having a mass equal to the hammer 1 and clamped to an elastic separator 10.
