Abstract: 1,246,221. Welding by pressure; forging. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 18 June, 1969 [15 July, 1968], No. 30732/69. Headings B3H and B3R. [Also in Division C7] In welding moulded metal to a preformed metal body a moulding cavity is provided having its moulding surface formed in part by a surface of the metal body, metal stock in superplastic condition is provided within the cavity and the stock is deformed to move over the surface of the body to friction weld thereto. A preformed sheet metal body 10 of flattened dome shape is placed into a backing member 14 either directly by moulding or after spinning or die casting. A die insert 20 is placed in the body 10 and co-operates with the body to form a cavity 22 and co-operates with the body and with a shroud 24 to form cavities 21, 23. Pistons 25, 26 having curved surfaces 27, 28 are provided in the cavities (the piston for cavity 23 not being shown) and all the cavity forming surfaces of the parts 20, 24, 25, 26 and member 14 are treated with lubricants e.g. oils, molybdenum disulphide or graphite. A slug 30 e.g. of 70% zinc 22% aluminium quenched from above 532‹ F. and reheated to 500-532‹ F., e.g. by resistance heaters 31, is provided in each cavity and the pistons are driven down by rams to deform the slugs against the body 10 and friction weld thereto. The slugs in cavities 21, 23 are friction welded to the side walls 12 of the body 10 and the slug in the cavity 22 is forced into an expanded base section to weld to the bottom wall 11 of the body 10. In a modification screw threaded bosses are friction welded to a metal typewriter cover by forming moulding cavities against the cover and employing a plunger having a screw on its pressing and to form the thread. A die with a central bore and a hollowed out bottom portion forms with a flat sheet supported on a table a moulding cavity, a piston being used to force a slug of metal into the cavity.
