Abstract: A hierarchical storage management system has a storage device, such as a disc drive and two storage drives, such as tape drives. Copy data is copied from a source medium in the first drive to a target medium in the second drive via a cache. If locating the copy data on the source medium and reading it takes longer than writing the data to the target medium, the system estimates the time that it will take to locate the data and read it into the cache. It then selects migration data on the storage device that can be migrated to the target medium while the copy data is being located and read. It writes the migration data while locating and reading the copy data. If all the copy data has not been read when the migration data has been written, the system may select further data to migrate.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method, according to one approach, includes: receiving a request to read a plurality of files from a magnetic tape, and obtaining a tape directory which identifies regions on the magnetic tape in which the files are stored. The tape directory is used to map each of the files to one of the regions on the magnetic tape in which the respective file is stored. A first subset of the files stored in a same first region on the magnetic tape is also sorted into a first order. The computer-implemented method further includes simultaneously: sorting a second subset of the files stored in a same second region on the magnetic tape into a second order, and instructing a tape drive to read each of the files in the first subset according to the first order.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method, according to one embodiment, includes: receiving, from a tape drive, a first error location on a magnetic tape where a first error occurred, in addition to determining one or more areas on the magnetic tape to be examined based on the first error location. Independent of a read and/or write operation, the tape drive is instructed to induce relative motion between a tape head and the magnetic tape such that the tape head is positioned adjacent to each of the respective one or more areas in turn. Moreover, each of the one or more areas having a respective number of measured servo errors which exceeds a threshold value is identified as a damaged area of the magnetic tape.

Abstract: Provided are techniques for performing a search based on position information. A search request that provides location information for a region of a screen image is received (900). A selection of a type indicator is received, where the type indicator indicates one of a text item and an image (902). In response to the type indicator indicating the text item (904), one or more of the text item and a date and time are received (906). A search is performed using the location information and the one or more of the text item and the date and time to identify one or more screen image identifiers of one or more corresponding screen images of a plurality of screen images (908). The one or more screen image identifiers are used to retrieve the one or more corresponding screen images (910). The one or more corresponding screen images are displayed as search results (912).

Abstract: A computer-implemented method includes: detecting a first error while accessing a magnetic tape, determining a first error location on the magnetic tape where the first error occurred, determining one or more areas on the magnetic tape to be examined, independent of a read and/or write operation, inducing relative motion between a tape head and the magnetic tape such that the tape head is positioned adjacent to each of the respective one or more areas in turn, using the tape head to measure a number of servo errors that occur in each of the respective one or more areas, and identifying each of the one or more areas having a respective number of measured servo errors which exceeds a threshold value as a damaged area of the magnetic tape. The one or more areas are determined using a predetermined algorithm which incorporates the first error location.

Abstract: A method for authentication is provided. The method includes storing, by a first electronic device, first path information in a memory. The first path information includes data representing a first path of input on a touch interface associated with the first electronic device. One or more first portions of the first path information are communicated to a second electronic device. One or more second portions of second path information are received from the second electronic device. The one or more second portions are compared to the first path information. The second electronic device is authenticated based on similarity between the one or more second portions and the first path information. The method may allow for separate authentication to be performed by each device.

Abstract: A method, a structure, and a computer system for resolving an anaphora. The exemplary embodiments may include extracting individual context data from an individual expression and determining whether the individual expression includes an anaphora representation based on the individual context data. The exemplary embodiments may further include, based on determining that the individual expression includes the anaphora representation, extracting anaphora context data and identifying an object of one or more objects to which the anaphora representation refers based on comparing the individual context data and the anaphora context data to data detailing the one or more objects.
