Abstract: PURPOSE: To generate a practical set of user specific symbol prototypes from a starter set of symbol prototypes. CONSTITUTION: A character recognition function 22 bidirectionally connected to an application program 20 supplies a recognition character to an application program 20, and strokes are passed from a tablet 20c. The application program 20 passes strokes corresponding to a supposed insertion text to the recognition device 22 and detects strokes corresponding to a supposed editing function. Input strokes from a segmentation processor 112 are compares with prototype strokes and characters stored in an online prototype storage device 26, and the device 26 includes symbol prototypes of the starter which enables a new user to directly use a handwriting recognition system and can recognize initial 'walk-up'. After training, the prototype storage device 26 has a user specific practical set 26b superseding a starter prototype set 26a.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To establish a character prototype set having a sufficient applicable range, proper expression, and mutual sufficient distance. CONSTITUTION: This method includes a stage for inputting many strokes being the constituting strokes of a mark to be recognized by this system, stage for forming a first set (CHR) constituted of more than one marks from the inputted strokes, stage for meaning the more than one characteristics of the similar configuration mark being the element of the first set for forming a second set (AVG) constituted of a prototype mark to be compared with the set of the inputted strokes during the usage of the system, stage for resolving the prototype marks of the second set into the constituting strokes, and stage for forming a third set (STK) constituted of the constituting strokes of the second set to be compared with the inputted strokes during the usage of the system. Also, this method includes a stage for identifying the mark of the second set corresponding only to the single mark of the first set, and a stage for deleting the identified mark from the second set.
