    Abstract: A magnetic head assembly is disclosed for transducing information upon a relatively moving magnetic recording surface while flying thereover and that starts and stops in contact with the recording surface. The assembly comprises a magnetic slider body including three downwardly depending longitudinal rails that are laterally spaced apart, the bottom surfaces of the two outside rails forming an air bearing surface, and a magnetic core longitudinally aligned with the center rail so as to define a transducing gap. The transducing gap is located at the roll axis of the assembly such that the air bearing developed during relative movement maintains the gap at a substantially constant distance from the recording surface even during rolling motion of the assembly.

    Abstract: A magnetic head is disclosed having an inner magnetic core and an outer magnetic core that is magnetically spaced about the inner core so as to form a three transducer gap structure. A flux sensing means is linked solely with the inner core. The fringing fields under the two outer transducer gaps have the same direction and are of smaller magnitude and in the opposite direction than the fringing field under the central transducer gap. The composite fringing field contributed by this structure results in a narrow pulse width and is useful in high-resolution high-recording density systems.

    Abstract: A flying head magnetic transducer assembly comprises a head slider (36) mounted at the free ends of two cantilevered arms (20, 22). The arms (20, 22) comprise rigid centre sections (26) and flexible end sections (28, 30). A flexible tongue (32) is fixed to a ram-plate (40) working in a guideway formed by wall (42) surrounding an aperture in a box-like structure (12). The ram-plate (40) carries an abutment (41) to engage plate (34) on which slider (36) is mounted. … In operation air flow caused by relative movement of the magnetic medium overlying the slider (36) and the slider (36) enters the structure (12) and acts against the ram-plate (40) urging it outwardly of its guideway. Flexure of the tongue (32) permits such movement. When the abutment (41) engages the plate (34), further movement of the ram plate (40) causes movement of the slider accompanied by clockwise flexing of the arm sections (30) and anticlockwise flexing of the arm sections (28).
