Abstract: The regular formation of uniform droplets is an essential prerequisite for high quality printing from an ink jet printer. Outlet nozzles of circular cross-section demand the application of a large amplitude disturbance, e.g. vibration, to the nozzle for example in order to facilitate the creation of such uniformity. With the rectangular-section nozzle opening a disturbance can be applied to it (20) by an encircling electrode (30) which is connected to a frequency generator (29). In a modified design several such nozzle openings can be employed each with its own individual electrode. With the use of this set-up the ink stream breaks up into uniform droplets within a shorter distance from the nozzle opening than it does when nozzles with a circular cross-section are used.
