Abstract: Electrothermal printing apparatus includes a thin, planar, endless ribbon of electrically resistive material having a thin conductive layer on an outside surface thereof and a row of spacedapart, conductive styli individually selectively coupleable to the conductive layer through a voltage source and disposed in contact with the ribbon at the inside surface thereof opposite the conductive layer. Momentarily coupling selected ones of the styli to the voltage source produces heating of discrete areas of the resistive ribbon adjacent the momentarily coupled styli. The ribbon which is mounted on one or more rollers moves relative to the styli and in the same direction and at the same speed as an adjacent length of thermally sensitive paper so that discrete areas of the ribbon heated by the styli remain in contact with the thermally sensitive paper long enough to color discrete areas of the paper adjacent the heated discrete areas of the resistive ribbon.

Abstract: THERMAL TRANSFER MEDIUM FEEDING FOR CONSERVATION Conservation of ribbon 40 is achieved by underfeeding ribbon 40 relative to movement of thermal print head 16. Pressure of printhead 16 may be low enough that smearing from a typical ribbon 40 does not occur. Gears 208, 210, 212, 214 and 216 may be positioned in one of two settings by action of bellcrank 230. One position provides a 1.04 to 1 underfeed ratio and the other provides a 5 to 1 underfeed ratio. Control 232 lowers print current for the 5 to 1 ratio. A printer having a single ratio of 1.04 to 1 provides printing of unimpaired quality with significant saving of ribbon.

Abstract: MATRIX ADDRESSED ELECTROCHROMIC DISPLAY A matrix addressed electrochromic display includes first and second spaced apart opposed planar panels, a dielectric spacer peripherally sealing the panels to provide an interior cavity therebetween to define a display region, an electrochromic fluid filling the interior cavity, a plurality of parallel rows and columns of electrodes disposed in the mating surfaces of the first and second panels respectively and a low output impedance electrical refresh circuit coupled to electrically energize the electrodes in a repetitive matrix selection pattern to provide a selected dot matrix display.
