Abstract: A data processing system comprises a bus network (136, Figure 2) interconnecting a data processor (133) and one or more adapter cards (137). The data processor bypasses initialisation of the adapter cards in response to a user indication entered 308 prior to said initialisation. This allows the system to be booted even in the event of an adapter card failure which causes the system to bang during initialisation. The data processing system also enters a setup routine allowing the user to disable one or more of the adapter cards. The user indication may be entered at a remote computer where the data processing system is connected as a client computer to a server computer system by a network.

Abstract: A display system has, in addition to a display memory for the main storage of display information for a character mode, a separate cache for the temporary storage of the definitions of one or more fonts currently required for display and control logic for updating the font cache from the display memory. This enables the efficient support of a character mode on a display system, particularly where the display memory of that system is implemented with dual-ported memory technology. Compatibility with existing display standards is achieved.
