Abstract: An upgrade for a stereo enabled computer system which enables such a system to produce and record surround sound channels is disclosed. Such surround sound channels are played or recorded using an additional audio card, which controls additional speakers and/or microphones, which is added to the computer system. Software for redirecting instructions from existing stereo application programs and sending these instructions to the existing audio device driver and the additional audio device driver is provided. A means for processing the digital audio data for either extracting surround sound channels from two channel data provided by the application, or for encoding two sets of two channel audio data recorded by the two audio cards is also included.

Abstract: A method and means are provided for simulating a direct memory access (DMA) function to access memory in a host computer having a DMA controller for the purpose of enabling the transfer of data between the host memory and a computer accessory data handling device not capable of DMA operation that can be operably connected to the host including determining the location in the host memory for data to be transferred from the host memory to the accessory data handling device or from the accessory data handling device to the host memory by reading the memory address contents of the DMA controller. Data is read data from the host memory at the address specified in the DMA controller and written to the accessory data handling device or read from the accessory data handling device and written to the host memory at the address specified by the DMA controller, respectively. The host computer is informed that a DMA operation corresponding to the data transfer has been completed when the data transfer required has been completed.

Abstract: An audio system is provided for generating audio sound for a host computer. It includes an interface connector for connection with the host computer; an interface controller for communicating with the host computer using the interface connector; a trap adapted to trap audio instruction signals from an application running on the host, such as a game having an audio portion; a trap controller adapted to control the trap; and an audio output. The system operates with an interface communicator which is adapted to respond to a request from the interface controller to read information from the trap and send audio output instruction to the audio output to generate audio sound.

Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed for implementing surround sound in an audio system having a number of audio output devices, and audio output buffers associated with the audio output devices adapted to output audio data in order of receipt. A block of delay data is loaded into a buffer associated with a rear audio output device. Audio data is directed to the audio output devices, by way of the buffers. In the operation of the system, data stored in the buffers is transferred from the buffers to the associated audio output devices. The audio data will be delayed reaching the rear audio output device until the delay data has been output from the buffer resulting in a surround sound effect.
