    Abstract: An IC card and package are taught which is easy to manufacture and which can be fabricated with a thickness of greater than about 10.5 mm. The card is formed from two side covers. The first side cover is formed generally as in Type I or Type II IC cards. The second side is formed as a base portion having a centre raised portion. The raised portion can be formed from deep drawn stainless steel, cast magnesium, aluminum or zinc or molded plastic. When plastic is used to form the raised portion, it can be injection molded onto the base portion. The plastic raised portion can be metallized to provide for electrostatic shielding.

    Abstract: An infrared transceiver for an application interface card for use with a computer in a wireless Local Area Network. The transceiver includes a multi-facet beam deflector to maximize dispersion of the infrared beams in a room while maintaining a compact arrangement for the interface card. In another aspect, the transceiver includes a revolving turret to provide directional capabilities for serial IR or point-to-point communication applications. The transceiver is suitable for PCMCIA interface cards.

    Abstract: An expandable jack is disclosed having a first member and a second member attached by a pivotal connection. The members can be expanded about the pivotal connection to form a receptacle for receiving a plug and collapsed about the connection, when not in use, to fit into storage spaces of reduced size. The jack is of particular use in application interface cards for use in laptop, notebook and palmtop computers. In such cards, the jack is mounted on a platform which is moveable between an exposed position, external of the card and a retracted position within the body of the card. The platform thereby moves the jack between a storage position within the card and a position for use, wherein the jack is external of the card. The jack allows direct connection between the card and a communication line without the use of a separate Data Access Arrangement and without interfering with adjacent card slots. The plug can be inserted into the card while avoiding interference with obstructions such as a communication line extending from an adjacent card in the computer.

    Abstract: An extension module 40 is provided for tandem connection to a base circuit card 1 having an external sheet material jacket 4 girding said card. The module includes a module housing 4a, 4b and a pair of spaced apart parallel support fingers 45 extending from the housing. The outer sides of said support fingers are configured for slidable insertion into corresponding spaced apertures 50 in the rearward end of the base circuit card to engage inner surfaces of the jacket adjacent opposite side edges of the jacket of the card. An electrical connector 49 is located between the support fingers and is adapted for mating connection with a corresponding electrical connector 3 located at the rearward end of the base circuit card, when the extension module is connected to the base circuit card. When the extension module is connected to the base circuit card by substantially full insertion of the support fingers into the base circuit card the engagement of said jacket embracing the fingers rigidly joins the extension module to the base card to form an integral extended circuit card.

    Abstract: A circuit card has a circuit module including circuit component assembly and an electrical connector attached to the component assembly. A protective metal covering closely girds and substantially encloses the module in a one-piece substantially rigid jacket. An opening in the jacket exposes a portion of the electrical connector for connection to external equipment such as a computer.
