Abstract: This invention relates to optoelectronic transceivers used in optical communication systems, and in specific to an optical transceiver configured for transmissi on and reception of optical signals or rays within an asymmetrically shaped optical profile. The invention provides a transceiver for communicating optical rays through relatively-positioned, shaped lenses while preventing the saturation of a photodetector by an adjacent LED, thereby avoiding any idling of the communication system, minimizing the transceiver's size, and isolating t he optical profiles for optimum transmission and reception of optical rays. The transceiver may operate in a half duplex mode, while being capable of operating without additional modificatio ns in a full duplex mode.

Abstract: An expandable jack is disclosed having a first member and a second member attached by a pivotal connection. The members can be expanded about the pivotal connection to form a receptacle for receiving a plug and collapsed about the connection, when not in use, to fit into storage spaces of reduced size. The jack is of particular use in application interface cards for use in laptop, notebook and palmtop computers. In such cards, the jack is mounted on a platform which is moveable between an exposed position, external of the card and a retracted position within the body of the card. The platform thereby moves the jack between a storage position within the card and a position for use, wherein the jack is external of the card. The jack allows direct connection between the card and a communication line without the use of a separate Data Access Arrangement and without interfering with adjacent card slots. The plug can be inserted into the card while avoiding interference with obstructions such as a communication line extending from an adjacent card in the computer.

Abstract: An infrared transceiver for use with a computer in a wireless Local Area Network. The transceiver comprises a light emitting diode array and photodiodes. The transceiver is operable in a diffused beam arrangement and a directed beam arrangement. The transceiver is converted to directed beam operation by attaching a user installable columnator. The columnator redirects the beams into parallel beams, and the direction of the parallel beams is controlled through an adjustable tilt stand. The columnator is detachable for converting back to diffused beam operation.

Abstract: An extension module is provided for tandem connection to a base circuit card having an external sheet material jacket girding said card. The module includes a module housing and a pair of spaced apart parallel support fingers extending from the housing. The outer sides of said support fingers are configured for slidable insertion into corresponding spaced apertures in the rearward end of the base circuit card to engage inner surfaces of the jacket adjacent opposite side edges of the jacket of the card. An electrical connector is located between the support fingers and is adapted for mating connection with a corresponding electrical connector located at the rearward end of the base circuit card, when the extension module is connected to the base circuit card. When the extension module is connected to the base circuit card by substantially full insertion of the support fingers into the base circuit card the engagement of said jacket embracing the fingers rigidly joins the extension module to the base card to form an integral extended circuit card.
