Abstract: It is desirable for software developers to be able to conveniently obtain feedba ck from users of applications. It is known for developers and others to use code instrumentati on for gathering various types of data relating to applications and their uses. The use of compile time instrumentation may be practical for some situations but it has significant drawbacks when used to provide indications of user interaction with applications. The pres ent invention relates to the use of run time instrumentation for providing feedback from users of object oriented applications where the applications have unique object identifiers and support dynamic data exchange. The invention utilizes a setup software tool to create a monitor input file which indicates which objects of the application should be monitored when a user interacts with them.

Abstract: A user interface tool that permits users to configure categories for identifying , through display, attributes of stored data. A blank scale is provided to which the user can assign the units and ranges of measure. The user can then assign a visible coding, such as colour , to each range. The visible coding is then applied to the iconic representations of the stored d ata files as they fall into each of the identified ranges, so that the user can see which data files fa ll within which range of the scale. The scale is individually configurable by each user, so that a sub sequent user can configure and display the category information according to different units and ranges.

Abstract: An activemark mechanism for a live parsing editor. The activemark mechanism allows marks (labels) in text to be referenced or linked to any editor command, macro, or any external tool activated by the editor. The activemark mechanism comprises a parsing mechanism which creates an activemark automatically when the document is loaded in the editor, and thereafter as a user enters information into the document by parsing the changes to the document as they are committed. The activemarks are dynamic in that their meaning and behaviour are updated in the context of any external tool which is activated by the editor.
