    Abstract: 1393401 Pigment dispersions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 Feb 1973 [28 Feb 1972] 9033/72 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions C3 B1 C4 and D1] Solids, especially pigments and dyestuffs, are dispersed in an organic liquid using a dispersing agent which comprises the reaction product of (a) a polyisocyanate, (b) an organic compound containing at least two groups reactive with (a) and (c) a compound of the formula wherein Z is -OH or -NHR (R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical: X is an optionally substituted divalent hydrocarbon radical: T is a divalent hydrocarbon radical: n is a positive integer: Q is an optionally substituted monovalent hydrocarbon radical: E is a group (R 1 is hydrogen or a monovalent hydrocarbon radical) and D is a group provided that only one of E and D is connected to T via the carbonyl carbon atom, and at least one of the groups represented by X, T, Q, R and R 1 contains a carbon chain having at least 5 carbon atoms. The polyisocyanate (a) is preferably a commercial mixture of 2 : 4- and 2 : 6-diisocyanatotoluene. The compounds (b) preferably contain two hydroxy and/or primary or secondary amino groups. Such compounds may be diols, aminoalcohols or diamines and are preferably aliphatic diols containing at least 5 carbon atoms. Exemplified compounds (c) are hydroxyesters prepared by reacting a fatty alcohol mixture with 12- hydroxystearic acid, a hydroxyamide prepared by reacting dilaurylamine with 12-hydroxystearic acid, a hydroxyester prepared by condensing 12-hydroxystearic acid to form a carboxyl terminated polyester which polyester is then reacted with epichlorohydrin, a hydroxyester prepared by reacting ricinoleic acid with oleyl alcohol and an aminoamido polyester prepared by reacting the carboxyl-terminated polyester of 12-hydroxystearic acid with a fatty diamine. It is preferred to first react compound (a) with compound (c) and then to react the product with compound (b). The dispersing agents so produced are suitably used in amounts of 5 to 100% and preferably 10 to 30% by weight, based on the weight of solid, and the dispersions preferably contain 5 to 70% by weight of solid. Preferred organic liquids are hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons and especially predominantly aliphatic petroleum fractions. Conventional inorganic pigments may comprise the solid part of the dispersion. Specified pigments are zinc oxide, Prussian blue, cadmium sulphide, iron oxides, and chromates of lead, zinc, barium and calcium.

    Abstract: Azo compounds of formula in which X is an aryl or heterocyclic residue, Y is an alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl radical, Z is an aryl or substituted aryl radical and R is an alkyl, substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or substituted cycloalkyl radical and n is 1 or 2, are prepared by heating a mixture of an azoacylacetarylamide of formula the symbols being as above with an amine RNH2 (R is as above), the mixture being heated alone or in solution in a solvent or in aqueous suspension preferably at 70-200 DEG C. The amine RNH2 may be added to an aqueous slurry obtained after coupling a diazonium compound with an acylacetarylamide and different compositions are obtained according to the quantity of amine RNH2 employed, i.e. only part of the acyl groups may be reacted with amine. The products are yellow in shade and have good dispersability in ink media, e.g. an aromatic hydrocarbon based gravure ink containing zinc rosinate, as in Example 12.
