Abstract: A composition comprises an isothiazolinone or an isothiazolothione and a substituted urea or a halogen-containing aromatic alkyl sulphoxide or sulphone. The isothiazolinone derivative can be 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one. The substituted urea may be 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea. The sulphoxide or sulphone may be a sulphone derivative such as di-iodomethyl-4-methylphenyl sulphone. A useful composition comprises 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one and the specified urea or sulphone derivative. The composition may include other materials including other compounds having anti-microbial properties.

Abstract: A composition which contains a 4,5-polymethylene-4-isothiazolin-3-one and a salt or complex of 2-mercaptopyridine-1-oxide with a metal which is at least divalent. The salt or complex is typically zinc 2-thiopyridine-1-oxide. The compositions exhibit anti-microbial activity and certain combinations of isothiazolinones together with zinc 2-thiopyridine-1-oxide are surprisingly effective against both bacteria and fungi.

Abstract: A medium susceptible to spoilage enzymes contains a halogen compound selected from alkali metal tetrahaloaurate, a heterocyclic compound containing at least two ring nitrogen atoms and at least one nitrogen-halogen bond, an iodonium compound and a sulphonamide containing at least one nitrogen-halogen bond. The medium may be a an aqueous solution containing soluble cellulose in which the spoilage enzyme is cellulase, for example as in an aqueous paint. the presence of the halogen compound reduces the extent of thinning of the solution. Deterioration due to lipases, proteases or amylase can also be reduced.
