Abstract: There is provided herein a flame retarded polyolefin composition comprising a thermoplastic polyolefin polymer, an inorganic flame retardant and a synergist comprising a metal phosphonate represented by the formula: There is also provided a method for making a flame retarded polyolefin composition comprising contacting at least one thermoplastic polyolefin polymer with at least one inorganic flame retardant and at least one metal phosphonate and heating the mixture of thermoplastic polyolefin polymer, at least one inorganic flame retardant and at least one metal phosphonate above the melting temperature of the thermoplastic polyolefin polymer.
